Need advice on 150 day fast track

everything I need to be a CFI and have a job I enjoy?

1. You don't know you'll enjoy the job.

2. What comes after that CFI job? Are you going to do that as a career?

3. How are you going to pay off that mountain of debt and sustain your family on CFI pay?

I didn't completely fail the ASVAB. I actually scored very well on it but the Marines told me I'd need at least a 85 so they could get me in with the maximum number of dependents and the Navy said that as well. I have been told that the recruiters lied to me and just didn't want to deal with me and some say that the military is super picky now. So who knows.

I'm not making excuses not to attend college. My point is why would I spend money on college when I won't be happy with what I'm doing. Why not spend the money on flight training and get everything I need to be a CFI and have a job I enjoy?

Please try before you buy; this is not for everyone.

What is it getting changed to?

$800 per month retainer. You earn extra money based on how much you fly, if your students pass their checkrides, as well as other things. Which means you can earn more or less than the previous $1500/month.

ATP's definitely going to loose some business because of that. I know someone who attended ATP and he wouldn't of went through the program if it wasn't the guaranteed $1500 a month.

I'm still thinking about my decision and I've been doing some research on other career options and it seems theres plenty of stuff I could go to school for and have a "quick career". I'm considering getting into personal training. The National Personal Training Institute seems to be a good hands on program and its around $5000 for the 6 month program and they help with job placement as well. I'm into bodybuilding and know a lot about fitness so something like that may be an option. I know I still want to fly so hopefully I'll be able to finish my private at least and fly just for fun for awhile until I can afford to get all my ratings.

If you become a personal trainer, please teach the globo gym world how to squat and that curls shouldn't be done in a power rack. That would be awesome.

Power rack works great for doing drop sets of curls.

It is painful watching people do squats wrong, their knees hate them.

Good luck.

First off.. good luck with whatever direction you choose.

Debt is a dream killer !!!!

I have seen person after person posting that they are quitting. Most of these are financial related. They find themselves in a position where they just can make it with a $350/mo payment. I have had to wait 10 years to start, I have raised my family and am now in a position where I can take a 80% pay cut to work as a CFI or as a FO (still working on my Comm.. I am getting ahead of myself). At this point I have a small car payment and a mortgage. Zero other debt. I think that this is critical for me to meet my goals and dreams. Others have said it better than me.. College first, aviation second. You are 20 (I think), I set a deadline to get my training started at 35 (working backwards from 65 30 years may give me just enough time to Captain a wide body).
Remember student loans are forever, you will pay them back.

pshhhhh... someone's never thought about cheating the system then moving to a foreign country and never coming back...

:sarcasm:

sort of

I'm not doing it, I'm just saying I know people that have come to college here with a 100% mindset to get out when they're done and leave their loans up in the air with no plan to ever touch a payment

Is that really true? Where did you hear that?

Before this starts heading down the wrong street....http://www.atpflightschool.com/jobs/index.html#pay

The instructors I know are super happy with this. They did a 2 month side by side comparison and virtually everyone made a significant amount more money. After 2 years of teaching at ATP, i would have been thrilled to get those kind of bonuses. I was always proctoring for others, I only got $40 for most of my checkride passes because I was the add-on guy. I also flew the most, but often made less in bonuses. This new system puts money in your pocket and gives you more control over how much you can make. If anything, it is moving more toward what a traditional instructor makes (strictly hourly).

It's true, the instructors at ATP are making a lot more than they used to ($1000/mo when I went through.) They're still working all the time though.

There is no amount of money that would entice me to work at some flight schools, for example Multi-Engine at GKY... maybe I am being unfair but I personally watched two gear ups from their Travel Airs, which are like a billion years old and look it too.

Hey, at least with the GKY Travel Airs, you get to see what each type of fluid looks like that goes into the airplane. They leak every color of the rainbow.

~~DANGEROUS~~ ~~DANGEROUS~~

Think about what this encourages. How many new broke instructors will be tempted to fly over the 8hrs/day so they can make more money?
How many will end up flying fatigued?
How many will fly when they should be calling out sick?
How many times will inexperienced instructors opt to make a flight in bad weather or with a bum aircraft just because they want to get that "On-Time" money?

ATP is putting their students and instructors at risk by doing this. Its disgraceful that a company which supposedly prides itself on safety would structure pay like this. Not to mention its an under handed way of forcing the instructors to bear the burden of any tough financial times. This type of pay structure is part of the reason Spirit Airlines went on strike. Giving benefits based on hours flown. Even ALPA said, "pilots may feel pressured to fly even when sick or fatigued in order to build hours and increase their income".

For a school which advertises, "Airline Style" training, these types of work rules are far from "Airline Style". In fact, no airline pilot would fly for a company who paid its employees in this manner.

Eh? My airline pays me in this style. The more I fly, the more I make.

As far as dangerous - I think ATP is one of the few places that does not just pay their instructors hourly. So ATP is about to get as dangerous as any other flight school? Higher bonuses for first time checkride passes? An incentive to correctly proctor a written exam?

Really? So if you don't fly for a month they don't pay you a livable base salary? What airline is that?

If you think this is ATP helping out their instructors by raising the pay, you need to get your head out of the sand. If ATP really wanted to pay their instructors more, they'd just raise the base salary back to $2000/mo. It's bad enough already that it's become PFJ and they skirt employment laws by playing the "independent contractor" game with a bunch of young pilots who don't know better.

There aren't many CFI jobs out there that have any type of retainer, at all. Hourly workers get more money the more hours they work. Seems pretty simple to me.
