multi time?

To find out the "per hour" rate of ATP you have to kind of make some calculations, see below:

ATP's 90 day course cost $54,995

If you assume $400/mo for housing that brings the tally to $53,795. (2 bedroom at double occupancy is probably less than this though in most places)
10 hours of single engine time (instruction) at $100/hr brings the tally to $52,795.
*25 hours of single engine cross-country at $100/hr brings the tally to $50,295.
50 hours in a Seminole FTD at $50/hr (about what a FTD costs around here) is $2500 and brings the tally to $47,795
125 hours of instruction at $45/hr is $5,625 brings the tally to $42,170

Now you can figure out the per hour seminole cost by dividing 42170 by the number of seminole hours (115 hours) for a rate of $366.70/hr without an instructor.
65 hours of Seminole time (instruction) - $366.70/hr is $23834 and brings the tally to $18,336.
*50 hours of Seminole time (dual x-country) - $366.70/hr is ~$18,336 and brings the tally to $0.

Note the 2 items with astericks, the 25 hours of x-c SE and 50 hours of x-c ME. These items are charged "twice" since two students share this, so this is rather lucrative for ATP since they can "double dip" during x-cs.

I went from 0 time to CFII in just over 20k starting in 2006. Networking, studying a lot, and washing airplanes. I will say that while I got sick discounts on airplanes, I did have to work my ass off to do so, which you will not have to do at ATP.

When I got my CMEL add on the Duchesse in my area was renting for $180/hr. It could have been cheaper if I was still instructing at that school, but I was freelancing by this point. My buddy I had gone through CFI school with gave me instruction for free. The price of the airplane is up to $200/hr now, and while I'm sure you could find cheaper I'll use that figure.

$200/hr X 135hrs = $2700

So a shade under 50k for closer to 400hrs TT.

Or better yet, I could get my MEI and let's rework the math:

  • ~20K single engine stuff
  • 25hrs twin time for MEI (to meet insurance reqs) X $200/hr = $5k
  • ~26k total (throw in some examiner fees and supplies)
  • 110hrs twin at $35/hr wages = $3850 before Uncle Sam
  • Back to just over $20k
Can't guarantee everyone will find the sick deals I did. It took me a few years and would take me a while longer to get the twin time (especially in the current climate). But I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Of course, now the Federal Government is going to pay for the rest of my multi time anyway until I can get back into a real airplane...
