Morbid curiosity. Upgrade times?

You are making it sound easy. [emoji23] At the end of the day though it's back to weekend reserve and missing out on college tours and prom and all of those other fun things during last few years of the offspring's high school career. Two separate problems I know.

This is ultimately an ego problem. We don't really need the money. It's 26 years of being a copilot and just want to try out the other seat for a while.

I hear ya. I just strongly suspect you’ll regret it deeply within the first six months.

So I missed the junior man stories, but imma thrown mine out there anyway. Not really a JA but an extension.

so sked called me at 0400 on my last day of reserve and told me I had a trip. It was a dh somewhere them operating a flight to SJC. It was, unfortunately, arriving after the last flight departed back to base so they were going to have to extend me into a dh on my day off. Being just woken up I grumbled an ok the hung up. At that point I looked at the pairing and let out a, quote, “well This is f-ing stupid.”

so I’m still grumbling about how dumb this is when I get another call from scheduling. I answer and the scheduler says, quote, “captain, this is really f-ing stupid. When you get to San Jose do whatever the hell you want. We’ll still code you junior manned and pay protect you. Let us know when you want a make up day off.”

Best JM ever.

Then don't upgrade. Or move to base. I've been a career commuter because of the choices I've made in life, in the same way that you're still an FO because of the choices you've made.

I don't LIKE commuting, but I'm willing to do so because it benefits my family.

Kiddo graduates in 24'. In all likelihood we would move to base after he goes to college.

Anybody upgrade to a lengthy commute? Curious how that went, especially if you still have kiddos at home.

EWR to LAX for 2 months. 2 young kids at home, 5 and 1 yr old at the time. It was a short lived commute. I held the “virtual” NYC base (@Maximilian_Jenius that virtual base was actually a real thing), and once that closed we moved to LA.

Long commute, always got on, near 0 completion, FedEx nonstop flight at 115am as worse case backup, but the 3 hr time zone really got to me. Not to mention sitting in an Airbnb pad with strangers and sometimes not even getting called for a trip.

The wife must have loved that.

I suspect you're correct. Downgrade is only a 4 month seat lock so there's always that option.

I upgraded, mistakenly, to a PHX-LGA commute. Lasted about a month until I was able to get DTW and just stayed there because I was lazy. Opened up the 320 category in LAX which was a much shorter ride to work but the flying is garbage. It’s a first leg transcon to ATL then I’m essentially pinch-hitting for @PeanuckleCRJ so he can fly the Caribbean!

Lol tough love. Great show, by the way. Im stoked to see an aviation podcast that isn’t hosted be an aging delta captain and his hanger neighbor talking about how fun the RV6 is to fly.

Yeah. I'm surprised Derg didn't start a JC podcast and give them a run for their money. Seems like the natural extension of this site and there are tons of interesting people he could interview who already visit the site.
