MMTO

Well take the $$$ out of the equation..Would you do it if money were not an issue? Maybe that describes the said pilot to a T.....

Unless you're Bill Gates, then money should always been an issue. Trading money for time off is one thing, because time is certainly more valuable than money. But for a stupid airplane? Nonsense.

Two birds with one stone...I am guessing he's towards the end of his career and money isnt an issue for him.......And the chance to fly a brand new plane to new locales and new adventures instead of the shuttle back and forth from Minneapolis to ORD.....

Either way I'm sure he's got his McMansion and toy boat....he'll be fine. Maybe he's got some side in some far away land that he likes to visit? Maybe he really enjoys flying and the difference in his dollar bill collection means little to him...It's not like you get to keep it when you leave Earth.

Maybe I like money too much. But to go from $205k to $175k in your example, seems nutty to me and all for an airplane.

Pretty easy to make 30k in 72 days of work (the difference between 14 and 20 days off a month) if you have a side gig. AND, you can be home every night of those 72 days.

Buy a sailboat. Or use the extra $30k or so as a captain to travel at your leisure. Sorry, but chasing airplanes because you think they're cool and giving up money for it is just downright sad.

Not sure if there is a way to mass update a bunch of posts here, but suffice it to say that all of your replies in this thread can be edited to add "....for ATN_Pilot..."

You know what's really silly.....? Trading 1's and 0's over the internet while trying to tell someone else how to spend their money....

I'm out. Gotta go catch a bus...

In the South Pacific I saw many high seniority Qantas pilot leaving their captain seat on wide bodies to fly around in a 737 or even ATR in the Islands, for less money but better schedule and a ton of time off: some 737 capt I met (former 747 captains) use to have 3 months off a year. the ATR pilots had a super relaxed schedule and were home every night.

I understand that you're looking at APC and taking your info from there but this is a lot more complicated. He may very well have been a reserve SFO based 737 captain working 19 days per month and only making minimum guarantee. Moving to 787 FO he might be working only 12 days per month and have more commutable trips and 85 hour/month lines . With that line being much higher than guarantee plus an international override and some trip rigs, there's certainly a potential that the pay could be close. With a large quality of life increase this wouldn't be crazy at all. I just jumpseated on a UAL 777. The FO could hold east coast A320 or 737 captain reserve but said it would be an enourmous QOL hit for a pretty minor pay increase. I just wanted to point out that the schedule differences could be huge and that the pay isn't as simple as reading from the chart.

You only get one life, do what makes you happy. Maybe he was bored of the 737 domestic flying and going to Asia, Africa and later Australia on the 787 seemed like an adventure worthy of a pay cut. He probably got more time off anyway if he was really very senior in the 737 left seat. I'm in the I'd gladly take a 30k pay cut if I'm still over 6 figures and get close to another week off each month, if that's the case.

New adventures? Get a hobby. It's a frickin' job. MMMTO is all that matters.

Different people value different things.

If flying a certain type airplane is more important to someone than money, then so be it. IIRC, @Derg is senior enough to bid for a Captain seat, but has passed in order to fly FO internationally.

There is/was also a guy at FedEx who has over 60 type ratings (707,727,737,747,757,767, DC-3,4,6,8,9,10, ect) all because he enjoys it. Personally I would rather be Johnny Knoxville's stunt double than sit though an unnecessary check ride, but to each their own.

Do I really need to qualify a post with "in my opinion?" It's a web board. Of course it's my opinion!

And yes, my opinion is that you're a pathetic loser if you chase shiny airplanes instead of money and time off.

I think @Derg did that for MMMTO.
