MD-88 Question

I flew home today on a MD-88, and I have a question for any 88 pilots out there......

I sat on the left wing and noticed something......there are two access plates (bolted down not riveted) and they leaked almost the whole entire flight......there was a trail of fuel on the wing (i think it was jet-a b/c it did not look like hydraulic)

Anybody no whats up with that?

May have been ice from the upper surface of the fuel tank slowly melting/effervescing in flight. The MD-80 series, without modifications, can require a deice in the summertime!
