CNN actually just said that weather could have been a factor. Thunderstorms to the south may have forced their route to the north.
Hopefully whatever happens we don't end up sacrificing more American lives over some third world cackhole.

CNN reporting the aircraft was deviating for thunderstorms/weather on the original route and took a more northern route as a result.

Let's wait and see what the cause of this disaster was. There may have been a security breach at AMS and this could have also been a bomb. All I'm saying is that it is best not to jump to conclusions about a missle attack since the media is basing this theory on a Facebook posting from an advisor to a Ukrainian official.

Do we have any Russian or Ukranian speakers here to translate? Not having much luck copying that onto Google translate.
The only thing I can make sense of is mention of an Antonov 26 (Ah-26). I believe an An-26 was shot down a few days back.
However the English headline says he commented on the downed MH17 flight.
That's why I am saying best to get 100% confirmation.

Doubtful, both governments have acknowledged the call between Putin and Obama. No mention of them being on a plane:

Russian-backed separatist leader Igor Girkin (who also goes by the name of Strelkov) has claimed credit for shooting down Malaysia Airlines MH17.
The plane went down over eastern Ukraine near the border of Russia. It took off from Amsterdam and was headed to Kuala Lumpur.
“The plane has just been taken down somewhere around Torez (Donetsk Oblast). It lays there behind the Progress mine. We did warn you – do not fly in ‘our sky,’” he said, reported the Kyiv Post.
“And here is the video proving another ‘bird’ falling down. The bird went down behind the slagheap, not in the residential district. So no peaceful people injured. There is also information about another plane shot.”
Stelkov and his group, the Donetsk People’s Army, apparently mistook the plane for a Ukrainian army plane.
