Malaysian 777 Plane Crashes in Ukraine

@MikeD how possible is it they fired at another flight and the missile downed the wrong target?

Anything is possible. But there would have to be multiple aircraft in close proximity, as this wouldn't be a heat seeking-type missile, this would be something radar guided, targeted specifically (whether misidentification or not); if the target was changed, it would have to be deliberately done. These kinds of missiles don't "bite off" on something, such that a heat seeker could, they are actively guided. Even over Hanoi/1972 during the Linebacker II bombings, you'd have B-52s in 3-aircraft cell formations, and the crews could actually watch the SAM that hit their plane, come up at them post-launch, guiding straight and true (from their perpsective), and hit their plane, not the two others flying close to them in formation.

After Obama announced new sanctions on Russia yesterday, Putin stated "Sanctions have a boomerang effect and without any doubt they will push U.S.-Russian relations into a dead end, and cause very serious damage, and it undermines the long term security interests of the US State and its people."

ETA- Kick Malaysia Air when they're down in the hopes of forcing US/NATO/UN's hand? Easy to blame MA incompetence, framing it as an accident? Waiting for the narrative out of DC...

Even if they were off ATC frequency, if they were on flight plan even "we" are not going to shoot down airplanes.
I sure hope not as long we are trying to call them on VHF and not UHF, we've been there before. Who does the inter country atc out there? I'd assume that the euro control doesn't go as far as Ukraine.

Ukrainian State Air Traffic Services Enterprise

I can't figure out if it's state or private based on the title... but not military...

US Military "advisors" saying highly unlikely separatists had SAM technology to down the airplane....

I was just watching this on tv. Had to turn it off. The reporters started that speculation again as they always do.

Interestingly...

Last reported radar hit is 250NM from the reported crash site....

"We" have before.

Euro control has nothing to do with this region they were flying in. Depending on which disputed territory you are in there right now will determine who you are talking to. It will be either Ukrainian controlled or Russian controlled. As MikeD showed earlier, there are NOTAMS for the Simferopol area. We just avoid it all. We do no overflights of Ukrainian airspace.

Donetsk militia takes control of Ukrainian anti-air installation

The self-defense forces of Donetsk People’s Republic seized control of a Ukrainian anti-air military installation, RIA Novosti reports.

"The forces of Donetsk People’s Republic assumed control of A-1402 military base," the militia's representative said. According to him, it is an anti-aircraft missile forces facility equipped with Buk mobile surface-to-air missile systems.

During the last several days the militia took control of two internal security troops' installations in eastern Ukraine.

Somethings not adding up here... either the last radar hit is wrong, or the crash site is wrong ....
