CNN reports if it was a missile, the NTSB will not get involved....

For the missile portion of an investigation, as that's moreso law enforcement/military/criminal, which the NTSB doesn't do. The NTSB would, however, assist in technical aspects that do fall under their scope of investigation, that is, anything technical related to the aircraft, and other investigatory factors such as ATC, weather, etc.

The NTSBs assistance, however, must be requested. They cannot go in and assume any jurisdiction.

Mode S always* transmits the aircraft ID and usually also has the flight ident.

If a bunch of animals who recently acquired an AA system would check is different. Which also leads to an awkward question: Do military jets in the region ever attempt to conceal themselves as civilian traffic?

Most military (ok - Navy SAM systems) have no ability to process any of the civilian Mode S stuff. So I doubt Russian SAM systems will be able to either. All you pick up is the Mode 3/A and C from the transponder. no flight ID stuff. All you know is you can see an aircraft and you have no access to the information on civilian ATC data strips, flight number, routing, speed, altitude, where it came from or where it's going. So you make educated guess as to what it is based on what it's doing, where it is, where it came from, EW, intel cueing, and using non-cooperative identification means, etc. Then after all that you tag the track, unknown assumed COM AIR.

The only thing the system will not do is engage a valid Mode 4. You can order a SAM engagement on a valid Mode 4 track, but the system won't accept the engagement order.

RT is thinking that they were trying to get Putin.
Not that our news is much better, but I would seriously doubt pretty much anything from RT about Ukraine or this tragedy. That is all I'll say about Russian media.

I won't call it an accident, because we're not sure what happened yet, and I won't call it an act of war because if it was a shoot down, we're not 100% positive which side shot.

And one last thing, Putin may be crazy but I doubt he's crazy enough to fly over Ukraine at this time. We avoid it like the plague right now, and I'm sure his people do too.

What crap? The war over there or the incompetent people over at MH?

#1, who routes their airplane over that area
#2, who accepts that route
#3, who shoots down a civilian airliner!

Their initial route was southerly, and it seems to be similar to what Delta does from AMS to Mumbai. Apparently the crew had to deviate to the left (north) to avoid weather.

#1. Many airlines fly over there daily from Europe to Asia, i flew to Thailand over there in April.
#2. Same as above.
#3. Unfortunately it has happened many time...

How the hell could this happen in this day and age??? Crazy SOBs! I am just stunned and sickened.

1635 BST There are reports that the aircraft may have been brought down by a surface-to-air missile filed from a Buk system, an old Soviet missile system usually carried on an armoured vehicle.

1632 BST Interfax says that the aircraft was “shot down” at an altitude of 10,000 metres. It says that Ukrainian authorities have set up an emergency cell to deal with the crisis.

Yeah, 'cause the Russian-separatist, farmer-militiamen have SAMS and guidance systems. "There are no Russian military assets or personnel here. Move along."
