Malaysia Airlines 777 missing

I don't understand CNN. They are making a big deal out of the captain having a sim at home. They are "speculating" that he used it to "practice" this super secret route that they flew to elude radar.

The man is a professional pilot. All he has to do is load a flight plan and fly it. Why would he need to "practice" the route?

...another case of CNN making something out of nothing.

Earlier today Fox had some knob* doing an interview. He suggested that the captain having such a sim at home was very suspicious. Made my intracranial pressure redline. Next thing you know, some "expert" will claim that it was highly suspicious that the captain knew how to reprogram the FMS and fly a 777 like a real pro. It's bad enough that we now have Joe Public outraged over pilots having the ability to turn off their transponders as needed. The networks are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with the aviation experts.

*I think he was some TSA guy, which would make sense.

IAD to BWI for me!

Similar experience... Pretty sure we leveled off at 5000 feet about a half second after we rotated. "oh... gear up..."

(slight exaggeration...)

It really sucks when you ferry an empty plane on a short flight with very little gas and there is low level windshear reports which means a required max power takeoff... and then they give you a 1000 foot level off. Thanks CHS.

24 hour news cycle.

Think of how bad they cover aviation.

They're covering hard news even worse.

Basically, cable news is "cat nip" for the "Micro Aggression" crowd.

I hope these pilots who are going on the air with CNN arent volunteering. "Sure, Ill kinda agree with your stupid theories for $10k and a steak dinner at Ruths Chris"

The C-141s did it all the time.......:)

I'm sure they're volunteering.

There are a number of people that I know that have been noted as "experts" who are kind of people that love to hear themselves talk.

You know the type you fly with that are more than happy to tell you about how intellectually superior they are… And then the reporter calls and they're more than flattered and more than happy to oblige.

"I was on CNN! Do not question me!"

"Oh yeah, right after that 'must see' zany cat video. Hot damn, I didn't know I stood in the intellectual shadow of Odysseus! HAMMER OF THOR!"

So far, this is probably the best explanation of everything thus far. It was buried in the "Opinion" section of the CNN site.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/16/opinion/palmer-malaysia-flight-370/index.html?hpt=hp_t4

"I would urge that we not jump to conclusions based on inconclusive evidence. The evidence we have may be "consistent with deliberate acts," but it is also consistent with other explanations as well"

Not to mention, a lot of these guys are retired and working on something else and want the publicity.

I have two former airline captains promoting books on CNN this week.

I've been reading a lot of the Australian news during the evenings here in the U.S. (following day their time). One of the articles commented that, if MH370 took the southern of the two routes suspected by the Inmarsat data, that the aircraft should have been picked up the RAAF's Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN), an HF over the horizon radar system (OTHR).

I was familiar with other OTHR systems like the famous "Russian Woodpecker" (NATO Steel Yard) in Chernobyl, but hadn't heard of JORN before now.

More info on the Jindalee OTHR:

New Straits Times from Malaysia now reporting that there were four eyewitnesses confirming the plane flew over Kelantan (Northern Malaysia) at low altitude, suggesting the 5000 ft altitude was genuine. They are now investigating whether the pilot used a combination of "terrain masking" at low altitude and common airways to make the airplane's primary target "blend in" on military surveillance radar. The "Northern Route" from the SATCOM data, leading through Thailand and western China to Pakistan and Afghanistan, is now the more likely route according to the story.

If they flew low, their fuel burn would be greatly increased thus decreasing the range of the aircraft. I don't see them heading to Pakistan or Afghanistan.

Is it completely outlandish to think that this plane is sitting on the ground being rigged to complete a much more sinister mission than just the hijacking? In my defense I haven't read all the past postings but it would seem like the perfect platform to return and penetrate airspace with. At the time, 9-11 was inconceivable..

4am, can't sleep..

If these guys were US pilots, would you fellas allow their characters to be assassinated like this under such unsubstantiated claims? Just curious.

Funny when I read one of the above posts ... airline pilot whose wife is leaving him, has financial problems, is politically active ... yeah that's pretty much all of them, save @Derg :)

Captain Shah was apparently photographed wearing a t-shirt supporting opposition to the Malaysian government. If he's found alive he'll be arrested. Until then he's guilty, and they'll trump up "evidence" like family problems and financial problems. What will they find next? A flight plan on the sim that shows a departure at 12:41, disabling of ACARS at 1:09, disabling of xponders at 1:21, venting the cabin before a climb to FL450...

As I stated earlier, I hope they're not unloading DBs out the back while loading live nukes in the front. Sounds like paranoia? So did the concept of 911.. It's a whole new world..
