Life at Compass

i'm still waiting to hear back if the company will honor the mil credit in the FAR since it's not in the FOM
FAR 121.436 3(c) says:

(c) For the purpose of satisfying the flight hour requirement in paragraph (a)(3) of this section, a pilot may credit 500 hours of military flight time obtained as pilot in command of a multiengine turbine-powered, fixed-wing airplane in an operation requiring more than one pilot.

I think it will be honored. With as many pilots they need, I'm sure they will take advantage of everything FAR they can to get people in the left seat.

What's it like in MSP as far as getting to and from the training center - weather wise. I imagine the roads are well prepped / clear and we don't have to trek through 5 ft of snow in the training center parking lot, right?!

How are newbies getting to and from the training center without a car, taking the city bus? Cheapest monthly car rental I've seen was $700/mo. Also, any good recommendations on housing, preferably close to said public transportation? This 5-8 weeks is looking really expensive right now...

Ive been looking into this for my Dec 30th class date, and I have a friend going through right now. Looks like getting a crash pad is your best bet. My friend now and another before him have lucked out and found someone in training class with a car that they carpool with. I'm hoping for the same fortune, but if not I will be looking into renting/public transportation. I have been told that a couple of guys went in on a 1000 dollar van for training then sold it right after. Another option.

I plan on driving my car up to MSP for the month and have been searching out crashpads. All else fails might just find a room on Craigslist, although I'd rather not. Unless any of you Compass guys living in MSP have an extra room available..

When I went through training my sim partner and I split a room at the LaQuinta. $51 out the door crew rate, so about $26 a night per person. Total hotel costs for all of training was around $750. That seemed like the best option since that comes with a free meal too (or two if you yank some bread, peanut butter, and jelly from the breakfast area). If one of you drives your car to training as well that makes it easy. The hotel lets you keep it parked there when you go home for your inevitable weeks off at a time. I probably spent around $1000 total between hotel, food, and gas contribution. Sucks, but it's all tax deductible, and at least you're getting paid a little more than you're spending.

I haven't looked in ages.....but some of the hotels in the MSP area will provide van runs to the training center on a regular basis.
So if you didn't want to do the crashpad/temp house/etc etc options, there is that thought if you just hotel it the entire time in training.

Well the Holiday Inn is the company hotel with van service. It's 49/nt if the company itself pays for it. Otherwise it's a crew leisure rate of 89/nt. Dumpy motel directly across the street from the school house is 275/wk. I asked around my class if anyone was interested in splitting lodging but no takers. I also can't do the 3000 mile round trip drive to MSP. I literally don't know what I'm going to do.

Update: I found out that the city bus stops right by the training center, its the 436. $2.25 a ride, coming only in the morning and going only in late afternoon /evening (commuter route). It starts & stops to make connections at the 46th St station (rail station). Could work for ground school schedule. Any crash pads near a train station?

Do we get any large books or manuals at orientation (FOM, GOM)? If so, should I bring another bag to carry all this extra stuff home with me or are most finding it fits in their suitcase? Also at my previous 121, business casual was jeans, a hoodie, and flip flops... Will khakis and a button down suffice for the day?

Nope, it was a cd-rom, a 1 inch 3 ring binde, and a cockpit poster. Khakis and polo or sweater is perfectly acceptable.

Keeping in line with everyone else, I received my second class date bump-up so far. December 23rd as of now. Gonna have to give up my salary job right before the holidays, bummer. Who needs paid holidays off, not me.

they give you a paper copy FOM/AOM when you come back from home study that you have to turn back in at the end of training. Full set of jepps is all you will need to make room for when leaving training, but as others said at orientation you get a folder.
