Life at Compass

I just started doing ATL-LAX. It's not bad with commuter hotels. Previously was driving to work from Long Beach since the base opened. I grew up in SoCal and was happy to leave that high COL behind.

Don't move for a regional. I did it. I moved to MSP before CP flew west of Hayden. It had 200+ crews. Flash forward a couple years- I had to commute MSP to LA as a Captain. Never move for a regional. Seattle is a small base and it's future is uncertain. LAX is much more secure for now. However, cost of living is many multiples higher than Atlanta.
Highly situational, certainly within the realm of possibility.

(Ironically, I just did the reverse of your move.)

How long have you been working for a regional? Because in the last 9 years, I've seen 7 bases close, including one I was living in.

Moving for a regional may be fine when you're 23 and single, but uprooting a family every 12 months gets old quickly.

That's the thing, I've seen a number of bases close at my previous regional including the one I was in, that's what actually prompted me to come to Compass in the first place. And yea it is totally dependent on your circumstances, I don't have kids so a move for me isn't that big of a deal for me. I don't think any of our bases are going anywhere within the next 12 months. But if you do end up moving you always have to be aware the best might not be there permanently.

Single is one thing, family? Well thats a toughy. I wouldn't personally unless its where you actually want to live. Base or no base.

Most of the relocating FOs I encounter seem to prefer Option B. New-hires have typically received enough time to relocate between completion of training and IOE. Perhaps one of our guys in the training department can provide a more accurate estimate. Staying put worked out better for my family, so I'm embracing the commuter lifestyle.

Thanks for answering my question. I'll go with B.

You should be able to get SEA from backfill within a few months (replacing current FOs who are upgrading or changing bases).
SEA base is guaranteed thru June 2017, per the original base announcement when it opened.
Good luck with your training and move.

Thanks @Vyse. If it closes it closes. I want to live there. I would rather commute from there to LA than ATL -> LA. Look forward to flying with you.

Latest rumor I've heard is Compass is looking at moving the heavy MX base from SDF to SLC since the lease is up next year on the hangar in SDF. Delta is apparently pushing us toward opening an SLC base to coincide and cut the SEA base in half. Purely speculation at this point but it did come from a fairly credible source.

no way @jtrain609 will live in base

FAA on our jumpseat did tell us that DL has a new business model involving no regionals, we'll all have a DL seniorty# and paycheck ;)

He seriously did say that. Then we all laughed
