It is an abuse of the sick system.
How do you know it is an abuse of the sick system? I know some guys/gals who called in sick when their cat died. I know others who didn't. Is the one who called in sick abuse?
It is VERY difficult for management to discipline pilots for sick leave abuse. Also, one again, usually those with abuse problems have other issues going on.
However, some will argue that they earned that time and can use it how they see fit. I left with sick time still on the books but Compass really promotes sick leave abuse with their use it or lose it system. If they paid it out, it wouldn't be abused near as much. For example, I called in sick one time during my time there. When I sent in my resignation I had 28 hours of sick time left. They cap out the sick time you can donate at 20 hours, so I was left with 8 hours that went to waste.
There is no easy way to deal with this, but once again, it is your time as part of the negotiated CBA.
Paying out pilots with sick leave is horrific as it leads to pilots willing to fly sick to save their time.
