LGA Expressway Visual Appr Plate Help

I don't know who's this is, but it's been passed around all over the place...

DIALS/2500A
F160C/1000
F131B/400
RWY31/020

Now, now...

They generally only give you direct the bridge (then the statue and up the river) when they are landing 22 and departing 13.

:D

What bridge? Which statue? I don't flipping know and like hell I'm going to memorize localisms when I fly to a trillion other airports.

New York, while a good layover when you're downtown, isn't hte center of the universe.

The average LGA regular would loose their shizzle if ATL approach said "Hay Airliner 123, fly the Georgia farwr hunnert to Roswell, direct the BJ's off College Park cleared for the visual"

"Report the ford plant in sight... oh, wait.. yeah.. we're landing east.. follow I285 south to the target @ Camp Creek pkwy, cld visual app 8L"

Family is from New York. I was born in New York City. I am New York City.

Don't try and church it up, jersey boy.

Or, alternatively if you don't feel comfortable doing a visual approach in an unfamiliar area, don't accept one. Ain't no way this hillbilly could do a visual on the east coast.

This has happened a few times, each time we give the same response if we're advertising the xwy vis we ask what's your alternate. We'd have to put 3 centers in a hold if you want to land on 22 and if you wanted a straight in to 31 we'd have to shut jfk down because they are most likely landing on 22

I know. I dislike the local customs of LGA as much as anyone.

I'm just in and out of there so much that it doesn't bother me anymore.

It's the Statue of Liberty, how can anyone not know what that looks like? There is a reason we issue the river up for 22. It keeps you a tad bit more then 3 miles away from the ewr traffic. If you leave it up to issuing headings, well let's just say some are better at it then others

I understand the reasoning behind the LGA local customs and I know the locations. Doesn't mean I have to like the way the instructions are issued.

What @Derg is saying is that some crews aren't in and out of LGA often enough to remember exactly which bridge or statue or which one is the Hudson (it's the one with all the bridges and closest to the airport isn't it? ;)).

I've even flown with people that were confused and bewildered as it was their first time at LGA. I can only imagine the confusion with an entire crew that is unfamiliar with the local customs.

I fly into LGA on a semi regular basis, and I can't remember everything. All the bridges, way points, etc. But that's what ATC is there for.

"Unfamiliar with the (insert landmark here). Can you give me a heading". And that's provided that the guy sitting next to you doesn't remember either.

This thread is making flying into LGA seem way more complicated than it really is.

You prove our point.

Why should we be forced to use "unable" or ask for a heading because ATC uses local landmarks for navigation?

The only reason I know the locations well is because I am in and out of LGA a ton on the Shuttle.

Because that's how it goes up there, just like every where else in the country. When I used to check people out flying out of Van Nuys as a CFI, they'd use a lot of local landmarks as well. Don't know what they're talking about, ask. It's just how it goes.

Again, it's not that difficult. I wasn't sure which bridge we were being asked to fly to last summer in LGA.

"Turn direct to the Verizano Bridge (I think that was the name of it)"

"Which one is that? The first one, or the second one up the river?"

"It's the first one (I think that's what he said)."

"Do you see the tanks?"

"No, what tanks?"

"Are you able to navigate direct to DIALS?"

"Affirmative"

"Navigate direct to DIALS, at or above '2500, follow the Expressway, cleared expressway visual."

It's. Not. That. Hard. If you need to, ask for help.
