LGA Expressway Visual Appr Plate Help

One thing to note, the waypoints for the rnav visual takes you on a slightly longer path than the expressway visual (at least our does). With this in mind, we have been cautioned not to fly the rnav visual if we have accepted the expressway visual since this could potentially affect ATC and what they are expecting for spacing.

With all if that said, I'm rather disappointed we fly the rnav visual. The expressway visual was one of few approaches that was actually fun to fly. Having the autopilot fly it is rather mundane. If you are worried about going in there for the first time, just do what I did and look at some youtube videos to get yourself acquainted.

Even though it is a charted visual approach procedure??

Definitely would not be at the top of my list the first time in there. However, I've never flown east of Billings. That's my point though. Not comfortable with a particular approach? Probably not the right approach for you.

I see what you're saying. It's charted, could probably back it up with a localizer or something else to be sure you're in the right place, no big deal.

If I remember correctly, if you fly over the two Home Depot signs they line you up very well for 31

On the same topic, I feel bad for the airline flying into DCA that always do the RNP to 19. They're missing out on fun (hand) flying

It's 3 Home Depot stores :D

For the RNP 19 in DCA, the River Visual is a nearly a direct overlay of the RNP. Our RNAV overlay is exactly the same as the RNP 19.

I applaud the crews for requesting the approach and having some sort of guidance going into DCA.

I guess they are not paying this guy to look out the window.
Jessus Christ guys, Ive flown the Expressway Visual 31 by hand numerous times per month for a couple years now, even more when I was based in that dump. I merely wanted to look at the plate so that I could get some altitude cues off the fixes. As I said the waypoints are in our database, I saw them used recently. We are allowed to include user waypoints for REFERENCE.

I guess its better to tell someone they get paid to look out the window instead of just saying "hey my plate shows an altitude of X at a 3dme off the 085 from the tanks.

Our RNAV overlay doesn't have any recommended altitudes at any fix with the exception of crossing DIALS at a minimum of 2500'.

From there to the runway, our RNAV track is 7.2 miles long with the first "fix" (starting the turn back to the runway) being 3.5 miles east of DIALS.

FYI, our RNAV track does take us a little farther out than the charted visual approach procedure does.

Thanks ctab for a bit of help rather than blindly attacking my stick and rudder skills.

I think what people mean is that maybe you were overthinking it a little bit but yes, people in the pilot community tend to enjoy being jerks for some reason.

7.2 miles long.

2500' over DIALS.

LGA is basically SL'

2500/7.2 = 347.2' per nm. That's a glide path of 3.5 degrees correct? Does your airplane have displayable/selectable FPV?

Edited because I fubbed math

Dude chill out is a joke!, w he n you get hire into a cubicle, they don't pay you to look out the window. What I meant to do was compliment you on going the extra mile. Merry Christmas

LGA scares the crap out of me sometimes. I don't know where "that" bridge is (and why it's not THAT OTHER bridge), I don't know Shea from Foxboro and that big street looks like an "expressway".

Side commentary but NYC thinks it's the center of the world and, well, it ain't. Shuttle America probably has no idea where the hell Squaw Peak is but I'm magically supposed to know before I"m even close to it to "Follow the Hudson". "Follow the Rio Verde to the Reservation then 202, call the airport in sight…" :)

Now, now...

They generally only give you direct the bridge (then the statue and up the river) when they are landing 22 and departing 13.

:D
