Ipad use on overnights?

I have an HP Touchpad and have found that the tablets still aren't a replacement for laptops. If all you are going to be doing is email and some web browsing it probably would be ok, but (for me anyway) the on screen keyboard is just too slow to use and the screen real estate just isn't as big as I need.

weeeeell the first problem is that you have an HP touchpad (yuck). Get an Ipad, i think youll be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the on screen keyboard.

To anyone considering an android or webOS tablet, DEFINATELY compare them side by side to the iPad. I was/is a die hard Android fan, but the iPad is simply the best, most refined, tablet on the market. It really shows when you look at them side by side in person instead of just comparing stats and price.

3G!!!!

I had a wifi only and there were times when I needed internet access and didn't have the option of buying 3G access. You can get the 3G and choose to activate the service on demand.

If you commute, the 3G is a lifesaver.

I have the wifi only version and tether from my iphone. For an added $15/mo I figure it will take 20 months to break even to the 3G version, not counting monthly costs for service.

Yeah but you get what you pay for. Ive had an Acer NetBook before and it was awful.

Well I really want the MacBook Air for travel but my logic is that even if the Acer craps out after a year or so, I could replace 5 of them if I had to over the years for the cost of 1 Air. The 11.6 Acer has a faster processor and larger keyboard than the 10.2" Acer netbook (which I'm assuming you probably had).

The first month I had the Acer I stepped on the screen. Crunch. $70 to replace it. Parts are cheap and it runs fine. You can't do HD video on it, at least on mine, 480 is about as far as you can go without bogging it down (however it is now 2 years old so I'm sure they have only gotten better) but I only watch youtube in 240 res anyway for loading times.

There is no doubt that the iPad is "nicer" than a netbook, like a BMW is nicer than a Kia. But the Kia will still get you to work and back economically.

Get the biggest netbook Acer offers. I know my 11.9* offers a keyboard that is 99% the size of a full size keyboard, which makes typing nice.

*Edit; Just looked it is probably an 11.6".

I've been using a wifi only iPad for about a year and a half on all my trips. I haven't missed my laptop at all. There are apps available that allow you to access your PC remotely if you need to do something on your iPad that iOS doesn't natively support.

Walmart.com has an Acer and a HP 10.1" netbook for $200 right now. My Acer has been trouble free for about 7 months of regional pilot abuse, for what it's worth.

I use my iPad 2 every day on layovers. Unless I am doing word processing it serves me fine.

Bluetooth Keyboard + "Pages" was awesome. Somewhat preferable over my desktop and Microsoft Word. Poor Autothrust has no idea his letter of recommendation was completely created and digitally signed with a table computer.

I share a different view about the 3G. I did not get it because a.) I already have it on my iPhone and b.) b/c Verizon wanted like 30+ bucks a month for like 1G of service. Wtf? I go through 1 G on my phone in like a few days. 2G goes up a lot and 3 is just a stupid amount of money. I just said forget it and went with wifi only. If I need to check something on the Internet and there is no wifi I just use my phone...kinda like now. My "pad" is a life saver on commutes though. Lots of Scrubs and Family Guy!

You like really need to cut down on the number of "like's" you use when you like post. Like try it sometime.

AT&T only charges $20 a month for 2GB. I'm 10 days into my plan this month and have 1.8GB left, but there is usually wifi everywhere I go so I'm not on the network that much... But that being said, there is usually wifi everywhere you go these days. The only time I really need 3G if for Foreflight and what not. Like I said its up to you what will suit you best, but when it comes to the iPad, it's better to have 3G and not need it than to need it and not have it. Besides, if you have trouble paying $20 a month for 3G, then you might want to rethink if you can really afford a $600 iPad, IMHO. But one word of advice, don't be a fool, wrap your tool... If you do get an iPad, dont even think that not using a case is an option. You will drop it eventually.

I'll echo the iPad 2 + Wireless Keyboard. I'm using the same combo and it's well worth not having to dig it out in security every single time.

Mine is the WiFi only version and suits me just fine. If I need internet somewhere without WiFi I just bluetooth tether to my Android phone using PDANet. I haven't personally tried but I've been told you can share the GPS over bluetooth as well if needed. I'm not sure why you need the GPS though when you're flying around in an aircraft with millions of dollars of navigation equipment. Maybe when the screens go blank my iPad will save the day I guess? I dunno. Now if I did a lot of GA flying I'd have the GPS and Foreflight or Wing X for sure.
