I'm getting a little bit discouraged

Just a minor interjection...there are people paying more than that. See the ERAU threads for more. I believe the number was $180,000.

Good lord people that is in rare instances. I paid 40Gs for my ratings and went to an aviation university. I'd say most young pilots like myself I are well under 100Gs of debt.

It's that mentality that makes it ok for people to spend $100,000 for an $18,000/yr job. You make it sound as though you can't want to make a decent living without "only being in it for the money." Should pilots be happy living in poverty because they get to do what they like? I agree that people should choose a career path because it's what they want to do, but there is nothing wrong with expecting a reasonable living while doing it.

:yeahthat:

I'm not saying that money is the only thing that you should consider when taking a job. What I'm saying is that you shouldn't say, well, I love, blah, blah, blah and would do it for free.

When you do that, then employers will say, oh, so someone will do it for free? They'll even pay me for the privilege of doing it?

Then I'm going to pay them less than a fry cook at McDonald's makes.

Yeah, I love flying. But I'm not doing it for free, nor am I going to do it for wages that are lower than what I made back during Gulf War I BEFORE inflation.

Is that "rare"? Whats a maximum threshold then, of graduates from ERAU, before you'll consider it quite likely.....

Annual cost, $50,000.... x 4 = $200 grand....

ERAU-PRC Tuition and Fees, Flight Program Candidate:

Man you guys have too much time:D Who cares. I know I'm not 100k in debt.

snip.... that doesn't mean that we need to be pessimists and completely give up on this profession. Things are looking pretty good for this bargaining cycle, and I think we have a very good chance of making up all of the ground that we lost post-9/11 by the end of the cycle. ....snip

Nothing I would like more. But it has never happened over the last 30 years. The hits have always, over time, been bigger than the gains.

The writing is on the wall as the regional airlines this year at the RAA convention in Salt Lake announced for the first time, they own more than 50% of all domestic departures. As that number continues to grow there will be less and less opportunities to move on to greener pastures and more and more regional pilots wanting to move up. This imbalance will create a one-two punch causing downward pressure on mainline pilot pay.

At the front end the stage is being set for pay-for-training MPL programs to create constant pilot feed eliminating any possible shortage thus upward pay pressure.

You can expect whatever you like. But the reality is the job is going to pay what the market will allow and nothing more. And if there are 1000 guys out there who are just as experienced and talented as you and all of them are willing to do your job for poverty wages, then poverty wages are what you're going to get regardless of what you expect.

Of course...I don't think that companies are going to pay me based on my wants and wishes. The problem is those 1000 guys who are willing to do my job for poverty wages, and other things I'm sure, but that doesn't help.

Problems will just get worse due to the fact that regional pilots will leave after a few years due to frozen (and low) pay. This will leave some openings for more people like myself that have invested a lot of money to get ratings and a degree. It doesnt matter if you went to ERAU or the school of you aint nobody, its who you know, and who you are related to, as well as being in the right place at the right time. Something has got to change.
