How do you make extra money when on the road?

I've heard quite a few people say "I do real estate on the side", but what exactly do you do?
That's a good question. I can't really see people who have a full time flying gig having the time to actually sell properties.

Maybe real estate investing? rental properties?

I "do" real estate right now. My foreclosure I bought is making me almost a 40% margin renting out. It helps a lot, eventually my goal would be to have 5 or 6 of the same out there creating revenue for me.

Nice! Thanks for the info! I'm trying to find something to do on the side, but can't really figure out what. Real estate seems to be popular, but again, wasn't sure what people were doing in the real estate field. Buying/renting properties, selling properties etc etc

I am a charter pilot and I tend to have a lot of free time sitting around in FBOs. I am looking for a way to make that time profitable rather than wasting it sitting around doing nothing. I have been looking for business ideas that I can do solely from my computer so I can always take it with me where ever I go.

What do you know how to do?

I am sure most of us can suggest something that you can do on the side, but in pretty much every case, there is the prerequisite of having some knowledge about that skill or trade...

You gotta remember, a lot of us that talk about realestate have / had tens of thousands to put down on something to get some money out of it and watch the appreciation while slowly clapping.

It sounds like your sitting at other FBO's outside you're local area. If that's not the case I'd suggest wet washing wings like I used to for min wage, and volunteering someplace very nearby and helping the resume. If the economy was the '98 economy you'd already have a side job just having a pulse, unfortunately there's not a lot out there.

I've been sitting in a crashpad watching the hours go by, and it's such a waste because I know there must be a way to make some extra money, but I've yet to find something.

I know a Delta guy who sells real estate in Peachtree City and basically manages to match his Delta income. The beauty of selling real estate is that other people frequently do the work of selling for you after you've listed the property. The important part is the listing presentation, so as long as you can do that on your days off, you can let other agents show the property while you're on the road. And all contracts are done electronically nowadays, so I write contracts from my laptop in the crew lounge or even from a first class seat between flights. Of course, if you both list and sell the property, you get the full commission instead of splitting it with another agent, but if it's just supplemental income for you, that's not a big deal.

But that's just one way to make money in real estate. The way to build wealth rather than just have some extra income is to invest in income-producing property.

I am a broker in Washington state. I fly corporate so it gives me quite a bit of time at home and this is when I schedule my face-to-face meetings. Most marketing work and contacts are done by phone and email. Even when I'm gone I can still get work done in the airplane and contact everyone. Works well!

I watched a really good docutmentrary on netflix yesterday about voice acting called "I know that Voice." Pretty good look into what it's like.

Seems like a pretty good gig. Seems like a lot of the good stuff about acting and being in Hollywood without all the crap that goes along with it...if you are any good at it, of course.

Yeah, it's in my queue. Or list. Or whatever Netflix is calling it this week.

I know a number of folks who do tax prep....make a bunch of money in Apr, May, & Jun and don't do anything else the rest of the year.

Translator. I learned one of the world's more difficult languages and now average $100/Hr. (double what my flying job pays). The foreign language text comes in via e-mail attachments, my English translation of the text goes out the same way. All you need is a computer and an Internet connection. And now with all the online dictionaries out there, you no longer need to cart around a load of dictionaries.

Remember, the path to easy wealth leads to failure and disappointment. Choose the most difficult task you can imagine, master it, and you will enjoy both financial success personal satisfaction.

Sometimes I stand in busy intersections outside the hotel and clean windshields. Made $122 one time in about 7 hours. If nothing else it helps pass the time and keep the blood flowing.

What language?

I do know another language, and no it isn't Spanish. This would actually be a really good way to spend my downtime.

Any tips on getting started?
(Language is Brazilian Portuguese)
