How do you make extra money when on the road?

People keep telling me I need to get into voice acting. Maybe I'll get on that at some point. Maybe...

I'm new to this, but the guy is a fellow pilot, fellow AF member. He paid off his COMAIR student loan utilizing this. I am still educating myself on this endeavor.

This, okay another point of view. I'll take the time and read this.

My question is, how and or why is a re-known author / entrepreneur writing a book about MLM if he didn't make his money utilizing MLM? From what I know Robert Kiyosaki is a respected leader in the business world. But then again I am just starting to read up on entrepreneurship.

I had no clue what MLM was so I googled it, and clicked on the wikipedia link...

As a solo enterprise, the amount of money you are able to make will be dependent on what value you bring to someone.

Besides flying, what might you be a subject matter expert on? Doesn't matter if you think it's a real job or marketable or not. If you know a whole lot about something, you can often parlay that knowledge into some cash.

He is well known for selling books. The people that read them are known for mismanaging businesses.
 
I have been involved in a MLM company before many years ago. I got turned off after I sold a good amount of volume of product for a few months and made hardly any money. I did not recoup my initial investment and was involved for about a year. I would say be wary. If you really want your own business, like many others have said do something you know a lot about and make money off it. Don't waste your time making someone else rich and you poor.

I like the ideas, but short of becoming a male prostitute or something else illegal I am still trying to find that great idea that will work for me.

Out of curiosity, how is Robert Kiyosaki a respected leader in the business world? I know Elon Musk is a respected entrepreneur and a thought leader. So is Lee Iacocca. Jack Ma perhaps.

But Kiyosaki? Is he known for his academic contributions? Was he ever quoted in a non-satirical context by other influential entrepreneurs? Any notable publications excluding yellow press?

I would hardly call Law School and the Bar Easy. Michigan only has about 60% pass rate.

I watched a really good docutmentrary on netflix yesterday about voice acting called "I know that Voice." Pretty good look into what it's like.

Seems like a pretty good gig. Seems like a lot of the good stuff about acting and being in Hollywood without all the crap that goes along with it...if you are any good at it, of course.
 
There is a lot of sitting around time for charter pilots. You are wise to try to use some of this time for a business or additional income. Almost all pilots have a side job of some sort.

My recommendation is that you utilize your laptop (which you carry with you) to earn an additional income. If you look at it from that point of view, then you may be able narrow in on something.

Here are some possibilities:

1. Design websites or business products like stationary or advertising.
2. An eBay or Amazon business. (Amazon has FBA which will ship your items for you)
3. Write books then spend time marketing those books
4. Be a virtual assistant for a company. (sales, support, etc)

Just be open to new ideas and opportunities. I have actually gotten great suggestions from one of the charter passengers that I fly around and that caused me to go in a direction that I had never thought of. You never know when something will just come your way.

I'd like to see that documentary. Most of what I know about the job is 10 years old.

If you're going to go the traditional voice acting route, you'll need to be able to show up at a studio. If you're on the road, that lifestyle isn't really conducive to voice acting work.

It's a great gig, and it's extremely hard to get into. One of my ex GFs worked in advertising (several of them did, actually) and she routinely had to work with voice actors for various radio and TV bits. Interesting folks. One of them sat down with me over beers one day and sort of gave me a road map of how to get into it.

Most of them were "regular" actors who have had at least some basic training in theatre, improv, etc. Most of the successful ones can do various "characters" and accents - these are both skills he encouraged me to develop. After that, you put together a demo reel and then you find an agent to shop you out. It's extremely competitive and hard-to-get work. It does pay well per hour, but getting those hours can be very, very difficult at first. I have a good friend doing it full time right now and he enjoys it, but the schedule can be tough and he had a LOT of inside connections to the business to get started.
