How do you make extra money when on the road?

Sometimes I stand in busy intersections outside the hotel and clean windshields. Made $122 one time in about 7 hours. If nothing else it helps pass the time and keep the blood flowing.
I'm relatively certain you are kidding, but I would not be surprised at all if window washers and pan handlers were making that kind of cash.

Translator. I learned one of the world's more difficult languages and now average $100/Hr. (double what my flying job pays). The foreign language text comes in via e-mail attachments, my English translation of the text goes out the same way. All you need is a computer and an Internet connection. And now with all the online dictionaries out there, you no longer need to cart around a load of dictionaries.

Remember, the path to easy wealth leads to failure and disappointment. Choose the most difficult task you can imagine, master it, and you will enjoy both financial success personal satisfaction.
I have a friend that does this for Korean. Looks to be a pretty good gig. I would do it but I barely can muster English!

No I'm serious but that day was an outlier. Usually get about $20-40 after a few hours and call it good to cover meals. There is a big difference between window washing and pan handling because if you wash windows at least you offer a service compared to sitting on the curb like a junky. The service and a smile seem to go a long way. Had a nice old lady pass me a $20 in SDF a few months back just from being friendly I guess?

I do know another language, and no it isn't Spanish. This would actually be a really good way to spend my downtime.

Any tips on getting started?
(Language is Brazilian Portuguese)

The most difficult part is finding clients. Most translators start out working for translation companies. Over time you find your own clients and work directly for them (by eliminating the middleman, the translation company) this significantly increases your pay.

How to get started? Network! Start visiting/contacting translation companies, ad agencies, printing companies, etc. and offering your services. Trade shows can be a gold mine.

The most difficult part of the job is establishing relationships with translation companies/clients. (Sound familiar?) The most successful translators are those who combine their language skills with knowledge in specialist fields (computers, machines, aviation, medicine, electronics, etc.)

Spending time in the country where the language is spoken is the best way to establish good relationships with clients.

As with flying, the first few years are about paying dues, after that you're laughing.

My languages are Japanese and German, but most of my work is Japanese into English.

Any type of freelance business really. I taught myself some basic web design, but I'm considering go back to school to get a better education.(although you could teach yourself.) I see lots of ads on craigslist for road side assistance tech. If you know how to change a spare and do basic car stuff you could work on your own and do that.

I am a charter pilot and I tend to have a lot of free time sitting around in FBOs. I am looking for a way to make that time profitable rather than wasting it sitting around doing nothing. I have been looking for business ideas that I can do solely from my computer so I can always take it with me where ever I go. I was wondering if you have any thing you do to make some extra income while on the road? I look forward to your ideas!

Maybe you can try being a waiter at night like this guy........

I like all the ideas. I think I'll become a bank robber. You know with traveling all around the country constantly I figure it would be hard for the police to find me.

Is there any market out there for aircraft appraisers? I feel like I have a pretty extensive knowledge of the GA market and aircraft/equipment options, etc. I've been involved in buying/selling several aircraft as well. Just a thought but how would one go about this? I looked up the National Aircraft Appraisers Association. Looks like for a fee and a short course you can do the job. Has anyone done this and can you make enough from the initial fee investment for it to be worth it?

I just got hired as a contract salesman for a web design firm. They provide leads and I cold call them. I get a pretty good commission, but I think my conversion rate with only be about 1% or so. I really wanted a sales type job, because I think sales, in general, is a good skill to have.

It is the hardest, best-paying job there is.

It can also be the easiest, worst-paying job there is.

PM me if you want to talk about it in general.

I don't think it will be easy, but I am mainly doing it to gain some experience in sales. I'll definitely take you up on your offer once I get started.

The best piece of advice I could give is to try and find some common ground to gain some of their trust. It comes much easier after that.

Although I don't do it, I talked to some guys who do World Ventures. I don't trust those programs but they say it works. If you don't know what World Ventures is, "You Should Be Here".

Is that the travel agency MLM cult?
You're absolutely spot on about that trusting that silliness.

Yup!

Pretty much. They swear they are only a couple months of sales away from getting that BMW, but I just don't have the patience for it. Those multi level marketing programs are just such a waste of time and I'd rather spend my time off doing other things. Not calling two of my friends, to tell them to call two more and so on.
