Spent a couple of days working out of here. Still remember when this was the largest F-4 Phantom base in the USAF. Selected in the first BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) round in 1988. George AFB shut down on 1 December 1992. Currently SoCal Logistics airport, it’s the site for mostly aircraft storage, repair and scrapping, with many aircraft from many airlines, mostly Fedex, SWA, and Delta, in attendance. A few movies filmed there such as the opening of Face Off.
The base side of the airfield is an abandoned ghost town mostly, kind of creepy to walk around as the sun is setting...
Photos by me below:
1. Abandoned base theatre.
2. Abandoned base housing
3. Former Wing HQ, abandoned
4. ATC tower and adjacent CFR station
5. Abandoned enlisted dorms
6. Historical plaque on the final years of the base
7. Abandoned Airfield Operations building
8. Former 27th Tac Air Support Squadron bldg
9. F-4 Phantom ground school academics bldg
