Furlough Estimates

So it’s almost a wash when comparing to LA county or SF. Still looks like WA comes out much cheaper! Sales tax similar, prop taxes about 1% so they are similar.

It is certainly cheaper. But CA has one of the highest Tax Burdens in the US, so a lot of places are cheaper. But it might make only a difference of a few percent in total. There's no instant move to save 10% of your income just through taxes.. The answer to that is to find somewhere with a low cost of living, but the whole point of making money is QoL, and that makes choosing where to live a lot harder.

Move from NYC to Florida? That' probably more than a 10% difference in income tax. We also don't have individual state capital gains tax here.

States are going to get their money one way or the other. Either through income tax, higher property tax, insane car taxes, gas taxes etc etc. I preferred the no income state tax and pay for consumption style.

Ouch. One of the lowest rates in the State, thanks to the way the levy works, but it's small consolation for the housing prices.

I'm sure those $30 Tabs will make up for it. Any day now.

Meh. Easy drive to work is looking pretty genius. The morons throwing numbers out on APC have me pegged as the plug. Which honestly is fine. Because I have an easy drive to work.

If I don’t get furloughed December 1 I’m going to be so stoked.

10K in Washington State would be for a home with about $1M assessed value. Washington makes the money on Sales taxes, their property taxes are just slightly below the national average at about 1%.
Yea we live in King County and we don't pay anywhere near that.

Even if it is 1% on house property. 10% in sales tax. I’m already paying the same kinds of taxes for LA County. A 4 bdrm here is already 900-1mil+ which is comparable to places within a 45 minute drive to SEA.

Sorry nickh, but this may be the one time where a move to WA would literally save the ~22k state income tax in CA.

All this.

One day, while drinking with our friend from Zurich, we did a show and tell about the cost of living in the US versus Switzerland from soup to nuts.

We’re not getting much bang for the buck here in the US and are swift to talk smack about other countries.

As a proud Texan I never fully understood this until I became a slumlord. They get us in property taxes.

I didn’t say you were lying, I just ASSumed that someone bitching about not being able to afford boots or complaining about captains having boats wouldn’t have a 900k house as a FO. Go on with your bad self.

Well now you are lying actually...
