Furlough Estimates

Yup. They are displacing people into my seat. The next step is removing me from my seat.
Unless they want to carry extra pilots at the lowest paying jet, instead of being overstaffed on the widebodies. Not saying there won't be furloughs but don't assume that every displacement into a narrowbody equals a furlough.

Meh, “Spit balling” is often inaccurate and largely a worthless endeavor.

That’s why I’m here.

This is very true. If they can power through the displacement training quickly and get people in a lower paying seat, they can save money while still (kind of) respecting the language of the CARES act. Then come September they can furlough as needed and there will be very little training needed as all the guys going out the door will be excess anyway.

Basically the money saved over the next 5 months is used to offset the training costs associated with shuffling the deck during a furlough and can shorten the minimum time they'd need guys on the street to be cost effective. It's scarily smart, and would only work with the government footing the salary bill for the next little bit.

I believe that this is the strategy at Eskimo Airways as well. Basically getting the government to pay us to go single fleet. We had a displacement bid that will affect 240 pilots. All Bus'ee McBus pilots.

Lots of pilots sitting around. No demand. No new hire classes. No demand on training other than CQ. It's kind of genius. The government pays for single(ish) fleet. We will keep the 321 Neo and they will probably all be SFO based for Hawaii and transcon flights.

It represents slightly less than 10% of the pilot group. So I am hopeful that is all we will furlough.

What threat of violence? What terrorism? No such thing occurred there.
Well, no one got shot, so as usual, you’re full of it.
Exactly what logical reason is there to bring a crap ton of assault rifles and armor to a "protest" about a virus? Do you both think they just like dressing up and playing "soldier" every once in a while?

These people were trying to intimidate a vote rather than use rational thought to convey their message. There is no reasonable excuse for brandishing their weapons in the capital building during a vote. Intimidation =\= Protesting

No. Displacing is what happens when the company decides too many people are in a category (base, equipment, seat). We expect more displacements to follow and they’re not saying furloughs, but furloughs.

That’s kinda confusing. If there are displacements, don’t there need to be vacancies to go to? Say you’re a ORD 75/76 guy and being closed out. You bid CLE 737 FO but there’s no openings there, so with your seniority, you slide in. Where does that junior plug CLE FO go? Doesn’t he need to have a vacancy to hold something?

I admit it I’m lost, I thought public protest was about changing public opinion.

And the lawmakers in the legislature sided with the protestors. Guess they did a good job, huh?

Yes, you’re right of course. When the colonists were unhappy, they just calmly explained their position and picketed rather than doing something intimidating like throwing tea overboard.

Right, but he [Buffett] doesn't own the debt as of right now, at least that I'm aware of - only the equity. Seems like later this year we will get close to the point where he would want to either (1) inject more equity to save his existing stake, perhaps in exchange for greater control, or (2) buy the debt, so that he is part of the restructuring. But a CH 11 right now just sends him to zero, assuming of course that he's not slowly & quietly selling his stakes as we speak.

Coming back to this topic from earlier in the thread, unfortunately it seems this was wishful thinking. Warren Buffett announced yesterday that he has sold his entire stake in all 4 airlines and has exited the industry. He was one of, if not the, single largest shareholders in each of the big 4.

1A,2A, and 14A apply here. LEO’s have their hands tied to a point. Said protest cannot turn into a melee or riot though. Trust me I would donkey punch and arrest any one of them if they wanted to fight. Carrying a firearm to a protest is against the better judgement of a reasonable man.
There were many blacks at Michigan’s protest at the Capital too. There were even asians there. So would that goofball have tweeted out “White, Black, and Asian Nationalists march onto the Capital...” The national media outlets and Gubnor Whitler really buggered up the truth ; she claimed that emergency services (Fire, ambulances) were blocked from getting to hospitals which was not true at all. At least the local TV got that right.
That’s my view from a non-white Michigander.

You're from the UP eh?

You're from the UP eh?

Only the last decade but I grew up near Ann Arbor. I miss the good food, ridiculous city ordinances, and referring to it as “50 square miles surrounded by reality”. The UP is a nice place to have a summer retirement home/camp at. Less chance of getting COVID, friendly people, no traffic, and great outdoor rec opportunities.
