Furlough Estimates

As to my own experience, I served for a dozen years in a variety of union positions. That experience is now five years out of date, not a decade, but who's counting? I wouldn't dismiss Captain Woerth's opinion just because his experience is fourteen years out of date, but hey, that's just me.

I trust Duane's input because he runs a consulting company and sits on a board that gives him access to all kinds of insights about the industry. He's in the position he is in because of what he did 14 years ago, but the knowledge he has about the current state of affairs in the world has nothing to do with his time at alpa.

but take a look at Asian passenger traffic levels. The situation has been much better in Asia for months now. Yet just a month ago, the Asian airlines reported that their traffic was down 98% compared to a year.

Travel levels in asia are coming back up in places where the virus is under control. China is running about an 80% schedule right now. The drop two months ago was in response to stuff shutting down again due to surges in virus numbers. Quick shut downs brought the case numbers way down within a few weeks and travel numbers went back up.

I'll add a tiny bit of hope: the government affairs lobbyists in our trade association are slightly more optimistic that a compromise might be reached in Congress that could address some issues.

The most recent Legislative Affairs briefing I saw pointed out that the white house has now taken the lead position in pushing for an airline specific bailout as part of the September continuing resolution. That means the democrats won't necessarily have to pony up something as a trade to make it happen, so I am way more optimistic about a cares 2.0 than I was a week ago.

If your position really is that somebody's prior experience gives them no insight into current events, then I suppose we'll simply have to disagree on that. When a retired Secretary of State speaks up on foreign affairs, I don't dismiss him because he's been relaxing at his ranch for the past fifteen years. I consider his experience valuable and give it considerable weight, while I certainly also take into account the fact that he doesn't have the most recent information at his disposal.

That is good news. But I am always hesitant to have any sort of optimism about anything that the White House is leading. How many Infrastructure Weeks have we had now? ;)

That Obamacare replacement will be announced any day now.

This is true. Let me count... I’ve cycled from “YOU HIT THE JACKPOT!” To “Dude, are you staying?” and back to “YOU HIT THE JACKPOT” about four times in 22 years. It’ll be two or three more times before I hang it up.

I don’t recall the shiny brochure for Jet U saying any of this. I feel deceived. Who do I talk to get some money back?

Force majeure in what sense? Not honoring the CBA?
Many contracts have a provision that excuses the Company from certain things concerning furlough and recall if the furlough is due to "circumstances beyond the Company's control," which usually "includes, but is not limited to, a natural disaster; labor dispute (strike); grounding of a substantial number of the Company's aircraft by a government agency; reduction in flying operations because of a decrease in available fuel supply; revocation of the Company's operating certificate(s); war emergency; owner's delay in delivery of aircraft scheduled for delivery or manufacturer's delay in delivery of new aircraft scheduled for delivery."

...or something like that...

The thing of it is, I'm not really sure that this counts, as none of that has really happened. You might call this a natural disaster but I find that tenuous at best.
