Furlough Estimates

For those who have been furloughed before, is it fairly easy to get back into when you haven’t flown for a year or two? I most likely won’t be working a flying job while this clown show runs it’s course and I’m curious what you guys recommend as far as keeping skills up/what to do when the call to come back comes.

Everyone is different. If you’re coming back to an airplane where you have 5,000 hours in versus 500 hours since you got displaced recently probably makes a big difference too. Or once you're recalled, you need to learn a new airplane while also shaking off the rust will take some time.

Cities. SLC comes to mind as a wildly better place to live then Denver and is actually near mountains instead of in Kansas and a 2 hour drive. Bozeman, Missoula, Boise(also a bit of a drive). If we include cities that are as far from the mountains as Denver it's like every single city west of Denver. • Portland and Seattle and LA are as much of a mountain town as Denver.

Portland should always be described as • Portland. They should change their name...

Anyone remember IPX. International Parcel Express? Yeah, I didn't think so. The FAA got tired of UPS subcontracting everything. Something about operational control. This would have been around 88. UPS decides to buy a certificate so they buy this IPX airline that had a few DC-8's as a UPS subcontractor. The UPS seniority list started with like 30 guys flying a few DC-8's. Then the other subcontractors were brought in. Evergreen, Ryan, Interstate, and Orion, which were the other subcontractors. Next thing you know, UPS has an airline and a seniority list. An in-house union beat out the teamsters in 1990 and the rest is history.

I only bring this up because I think, as much as I hate them, Amazon is going to be a thing. Not sure if the Feds will force them to start their own airline but there is a fair amount of oversight directed at the FAA these days. I got hired at UPS in 1990 and it was not considered a good job by most. At least a quarter of my class bailed in the first year. So, my prediction is, Amazon buys Mesa.....

This wouldn't surprise me a bit. Or something like it.

My dad quit UPS during ground school in 1989 to go to the original Midway, after he was furloughed from bankrupt Braniff 2. Hindsight being what it is and everything it worked out for him, he wound up at Morris Air and the rest is history. At least it taught me to be always be prepared for no income.

Don't be afraid to look into places like wheelsup. You aren't making what you're making at your carrier, but you'd keep current.

Definitely not afraid of applying to places like these but I've applied to 20-30 pilot openings over a 3 month span and almost all will not touch someone with furlough recall at a major. I believe a lot of TSA/Compass pilots are getting calls for these from what I have heard. Which, to be honest, deserve it more.

Truth! I had some beers with the CEO in Vegas, cool guy.
