Expect more holding for EWR

Related to all of this, I’ve been told that the Waterloo, IA TRACON got merged into the Des Moines, IA TRACON earlier this year.

With only a single fiber line (not two, redundancy was the spec) for the radar feed to DSM.

Brilliant. At least it’s flat out there, I guess.

Eh that’s an entirely different situation. Through Fusion, DSM is getting feeds through multiple different radars. If one goes out it doesn’t really affect anything. The problem with EWR/PHL was that all the radar feeds still went to N90, and then all that data was transmitted to PHL over a single line. So even though we lost everything here in PHL, it still worked fine at N90.

Ahhh, okay. I’m not nearly as familiar with the actual machinery as I should be (my desire to know more has intensified), but I thought I’d pass it along.

Thanks for the insight. Is “Fusion” the project or the product?

I believe it’s the name of both. But basically we used to only have a feed from our own radar but Fusion merged all the surrounding facility radars which let us go from a 5-7 second sweep to a 1-2 second sweep, better radar coverage, and tons more redundancy.

Yeah exactly. Then we followed them across the continent. They ended up calling NorCal on guard for some reason. Like it was day 1 of working the audio panel.
I managed to call South Ground in ATL when I wanted to call North Ground. He was a very good sport about it.

“SouthernJets 2716, if you are indeed approaching One North, for the best service I advise calling the North Ground controller on 121.9.”
“Oops, never done that, have a good one.”
“Cheers!”
Dies of quiet embarassment

Apparently, DFW/ZFW has the same system. Single fiber line was cut yesterday and brought AA to its knees. 800 scheduled departures and only 9 aircraft departed in a 3 hour window during peak.

Soooooo....
Is someone going to ask why a critical piece of infrastructure has an obvious single point failure?

Anyone?
Budgetary constraints? Design oversight? They have been trying to tell us for my entire career that we are some sort of customer service organization and they justify doing shady stuff by saying its good customer service. We are not customer service, we are safety professionals and I give a rats ass if someone gets delayed because of safety or a project is completed in an inadequate manner due to budget. We are not here to make a profit, we are here to provide public safety. Not just for pilots and passengers but for everyone they fly over.

I’m sure American is. This probably cost them a couple of million. I know some doctor’s offices with dual failover internet/comms. Seems ridiculous for ZFW to have a single provider.
