This was submitted as "snacks" and was reimbursed with union money. The first one was caught by the secretary treasurer and denied. Shortly thereafter the MEC chairman began a camapaign to remove/replace the secretary treasurer for doing his job. The EGL ALPA policy at the time prohibited the purchase of Alcohol with union money due to budget issues. So, they started calling their drinking parties "snacks." The expense reports are full of misuse of member money in this manner. A complete misappropriation of union money.

Ask them if they drank booze that was later reimbursed by union money... ask them that. Facts don't lie.

My understanding is that the "evidence" you've presented has never really been in dispute. Tony basically said "you guys are f'd in the head with your silly resolution on alcohol, and here's what I think about it." The smartest thing to do? Probably not, but neither was ratifying your anti-alcohol resolution.

As far as expensing alcohol as "snacks," everyone does it at every MEC. Tony is nothing special there. I've expensed probably ten times the "snacks" that Tony has. It's not a coverup, and it's not dishonest. It's just the only Concur and Infor category that makes sense for it. It's standard practice, and you're making a mountain out of a molehill. But like I said, everyone with half a brain can see why you're doing it, and it's certainly not for any honorable reason.

When one makes six figures, 300 dollars is meh. But when one makes 25k - 45k, which is basically all Eagle FOs, representing ~50% of the collective Eagle pilot group, 300 dollars is (and should be) an outrage. It's a little bit here, and a little bit there. What's wrong is wrong. If their policy states no alcoholic beverages, and then those are purchased and charged as "Snacks" then it is both wrong and fraudulent.

Do you have to drink on union pilot dime? You can't do that on your own time and dime? I certainly wouldn't be drinking and charging from my pilot dues 1.95% for alcoholic beverages. But then again, I wouldn't be eating 40 dollar steaks either.

To go a step further, look at the XJ/9L/9E merger committee expenses. For the 3 people on XJ, they submitted expense reports worth ~ $6000 for the duration of the negotiations. For 9L, 2 people, ~$5000. But for 9E, 3 people, a total expense report submitted for $12,000! ALPA National refused to pay out Hunta initially. Last I heard, albeit several months ago, he still hadn't gotten the money back. There is a certain line of reasonability. But when there is no accountability except by the MEC treasurer, which in Eagle's case, gets steamrolled once the truth comes out, then what do you expect?

Well, when other pilots aren't abusing the non-existant 1.95% of dues, I'd say it lessens up some scandals. :)

Is it wrong/bad I had to look up Turk 182 :( ? Sounds like an interesting movie though.

These people are in positions of trust and many of them have proven unequivocally they cannot be trusted. Stealing, embezzlement, lying and violating the rules is not "petty" nonsense. Especially when you are in a position of representing the interests of 3,000 people. That is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Why does it matter if it's $20 or $10,000 dollars? Stealing is stealing. If they took it from your pocket you would be pissed. These issues have been proven, with supporting documentation and receipts. For example; Going on a 57 drink bender, lying about it, then charging it to ALPA for reimbursement (funded by us), is absolutely not OK, under any circumstances. Claiming mileage for reimbursement when you fly somewhere, is wrong. Dinners regularly averaging well over $100 per person (and in violation of the alcohol policy) are absolutely ridiculous. In my entire life I have never spent that much on a dinner for myself. Hundreds of dollars worth of purchases at LIQUOR stores (on us) is flat out wrong. There is no possible rational excuse for this crap. This is an association for protecting and representing pilots, funded by the pilots. It's not a full service VIP party barge. These are just a few example's of MANY we have seen lately. It's no wonder Eagle and ALPA is so screwed up, when the naive pilots among the ranks fully support this kind of behavior. It doesn't matter who it is, or what political side you are on, there is no excuse for this kind of behavior. EVER. Val, Kelly, Tony, Dave, Doug, Herb, Phil, etc.. who cares which political side they are on.. it's wrong. Every one of them that's a part of it should be removed and held accountable.

I have posted examples from BOTH political sides of this mess.

Claiming it's only political is just people's way of trying to divert attention and shift the blame away from themselves. Anyone with half a brain can see all the unethical corruption going on.
 
It's always the loudmouthed bystanders who have never done an ounce of union work in their lives who want to attack the guys actually making the sacrifices to get the work of the pilots done. Instead of thanking guys like Tony for working 18 hour days 6-7 days a week for years on end, spending far more time away from home than any line pilot, in many cases making less money doing so, you'd rather attack them for trying to have some semblance of a normal life by having a decent meal and a few drinks. Pathetic.

Tell you what, hot shots, if you think living the life of a full-time union officer is so glamorous, with bottomless liquor bottles and never-ending buckets of lobster, then how 'bout you step up to the plate and give it a shot. In six months, when you've realized that you never see your wife or kids anymore, your phone never stops ringing, your blood pressure has spiked, and your hair is going prematurely gray while simultaneously falling out, then get back to me on how important you think it is to force union reps to eat $15 dinners and not have anything to drink. Until then, you can bite me.

You should see what the "don't tread on me" tea partiers did to Jared over on Eagle Lounge. It included making fun of his name like a bunch of six year olds.

Well said ATN, also want to reiterate what Sean said, way to take down that many car bombs. I have a great car bomb story involving some pilots and one FA if anyone is interested.

Moving on, I've flown some politicians, minor celebrities, and to hear what they go through on a daily basis boggles me.

I know most choose to live this way, but they have zero personal time to themselves. I'm actually in favor of politicians having a side gal/guy and some booze. If that's what it takes for the individual to stay sane, then so be it. They're working for us and the better condition they're in, the more success he/she can have serving their constituents.

He's an honorable guy and I know him personally.

What those people put that guy through was straight up ridiculous.

If this is the same circle, they don't have a thing to say to me.

The philandering is about power and conquest, not about getting their jollies. Of course, maybe that's how they get their jollies.
 
I don't get it. I just can't comprehend why people think this is ok. $30 or $3000, it shouldn't matter. ATN says it's so that the reps can have "some semblance of a normal life." Normal for who exactly? I can't think of anyone I have ever flown with who would spend money like that. Of course maybe that is because the line pilots are responsible for paying for their own meals and bar tabs.

Here's a possible solution to this problem though. Lets pay union reps per diem instead of having them on expenses. If reps want to spend their own money on steak and alcohol, so be it, but they shouldn't be spending money that is forced out of pilots pay checks on it.

I didn't necessarily mean to imply that it was ok.

We have zero power or authority to create change at Jetcareers about an Eagle issue hopefully being handled by Eagle people. We are firmly in the 'peanut gallery' here.

My "Yeah? SO?" isn't meant to imply that it's not important or abusive just that it doesn't rise to the level of getting my lazy ass off the couch to round up the pitchforks and torches. Some of us have been shaking our fists at "the man" on much larger union issues when many of you guys were in junior high school so I really don't require a lecture. :)

It would be more expensive to pay conus rate per diem then expense reports. Take it from me who did the job as MEC STR for two years. We had rules on what could be expensed but I'm sure we don't know the whole story that is going on over at Eagle. If that isn't enough you can ask Cruise, CAPIP1998, Seggy, ATN_Pilot, Gonzo

Maybe you are. Most of the people I know did not abuse the policies in place. If there was any question about anything it was an easy phone call and a review of the policy manual. I'm sure if you read your policy manual there are stipulations in there about what can and cannot be expensed.
