Could You Land A Plane?

In the UNLIKELY event of such an...well...event, I'd probably has the senior F/A to roll a galley up front for me and a few folks in the back...start poppin' out the mini's. We'd get a good gang up front to party our way down. Might as well a) try to land, and b) have a good time doing it.

I can see it now: NTSB finds one man and 12 women naked in the wreckage of Flight 100, among empty liquor containers and beer cans. Cause of the accident: Pilot error.

You put it best...UNLIKELY

LMFAO I always said in E-3's if we were gonna crash, I would take my clothes off, and get inside the galley freezer. Just to confuse the investigator.

I landed at two different class b airports today, 3 class d, one class c and an uncontrolled...busy day... got an approach into every one including a no gyro ASR approach into key west..(my flight today..VRB-PHK-EYW-FMY-TPA-MCO-MLB-VRB..if anyone cares...)

You're from NY, I presume, from what your profile says...
Just out of curiousity, are you flying in Florida as vacation or are you working there? Just curious—sorry if it may seem too personal.

I moved from NY to work as CFI here in Florida...I have been down here since March.

I would be the first one to volunteer to land the plane. Not because I know how, but because I have self confidence and I simply would not trust my life in the hands of someone else who doesn't know what they are doing. I wouldn't go out like that.

It would most likely play out like this:

You just landed that heavy and before you can even get up off your knees from kissing the ground the FAA is hounding you because you did not have the proper ratings to fly that 747.

I took a non-flying friend to the simulator one time, years ago. I let him fly awhile then started talking him through a VFR approach and landing. I think we were in the 727 but it could have been L-1011.

Any way I was amazed at how well he was doing. We were configured and on speed and in the slot. Finally he said with a somewhat strained voice. "Should it take this much pressure to hold it?" I took the controls and could hardly maintain attitude we were so far out of trim. We had configured from clean straight and level to landing and I had forgotten about the trim.

So if you're talking them down don't forget to mention trim.

Well I had a go of flying the Saab 2000 Lvl D sim with practically no prior knowledge of the aircraft before hand. In comparison to a light aircraft it's like driving a powerful bus, it's fast, but slow to do anything else like turning, changing attitudes or power settings and the controls felt heavy and there was a lot more lag than I'm used to between control input and the aircraft responding. I was able to fly an ILS with the help of the flight director, but without it I would have been all over the place and aparently flying an ILS without the FD is quite difficult even for an experenced pilot.

I was also able to fly a VFR pattern, again controls a little sluglish but I was able to put it down on the runway, a rather hard landing but no damage done none the less. Aparently the flare involves yanking hard back on the yoke while your still maybe 50-100ft off the runway, somthing I'm definatly not used to doing in a light twin. Plus getting extablished several miles out would have helped too!

So yeah I think I could get an airliner to the runway, but it might be more of a controled crash than a smooth landing!

A few weeks ago I posted about my experience with the ATOP course at the Continental Facility in Houston on some other boards, so I didn't want to bore those that had already seen it by posting it here.

The first day and part of the second was spent going over the systems of the 737-300. On the second day we practiced engine start and rapid decompression procedures in the FTD. On the second night we spent two hours in the Level D sim, half an hour as Captain, half an hour as F/O, and one hour observing.

To make a long story short, my first landing resulted in a bounce because I let the plane get away from me as I was crossing the threshold. The second landing from a 500 overcast was spot on. I'd just finished the IR so my instrument flying was better than my visual flying I guess. It was an overwhelming experience even with the brief background we acquired over the previous day and a half, and I couldn't imagine someone with no hands-on experience getting it done, particularly a non-pilot.
