Could You Land A Plane?

[ QUOTE ]
Hey, that's cheating. You already land planes for a living.

Alright, it was a bad attempt at sarcasm. I apoligize. I'll change the question to if you (DougTaylor) had to land another commercial plane which you have not landed before would you be able to do it? I would guess Maybe is your answer. This may be a silly question, but Does the landing flare vary that much between the different commercial planes?

Hey Doug, what do you think you will be flying next?

[/ QUOTE ]

Probably an MD-88 this sunday!

Well, I learned from flight sim that it's a really bad idea to pull the throttle to idle in a 737 when you're trying to land it. And that it's not smart to stall a 747 because recovering from that is a royal pain the butt!

In all seriousness, could I land a transport category aircraft if I had to? If you define landing as getting it on the ground, sure. If you define it as doing it without killing anyone on board, I don't know. And if you define it as getting it on the ground in a way where it could be reused, the answer is no.

I could probably land most commercial airlines without killing anyone, but it certainly wouldn't be pretty. Most of the Boeing configurations are about the same, whereas McD's kind of wacky, but I could fly a DC-9 as long as I didn't mess with that autopilot from the dark ages.

But from recent memory, the 'picture' on a 737 compared to the 'picture' from the -88/90 series of aircraft is quite different.

You really don't flare an -88. You kind of arrest the descent rate about 5 to 8 feet above the runway (rough estimate), reduce power and hold the pitch attitude. If you try to increase the pitch during the flare, you're just going to prang the gear and do an embarassingly awful landing...

Like my last one today!

I figure if someone doesn't try we all die anyway, so I might as well give it a shot if I'm the best qualified!!!!!!!!!!
I've only landed a RJ in the flight sim at Pan Am. I don't know how realistic that sim is, but as long as I have help with where things are, I'd be real confident.

I belive that I could keep the blue side up and the brown side down untill I got on the radio and got some help.

With someone talking me through it I figure I could set up an aproach and pull of emergency landing. It wouldnt be pretty, but I think I could get the plane on the ground in one peice.

I'm not sure, but I recall reading somewhere that on Flight 93 on 9/11 there was a private pilot among the pasengers. He was never mentioned in the reports of the passengers retaking the plane, but you have to wonder.

I'd LOVE to watch one of you Microsoft flight simulator wonder pilots attempt to land a real airliner.......from a safe distance of course, I hear those jet fuel fires burn really hot

Watch the knocking of the flight simmers....

I seriously would like to see a guy who flies light singles try to land a transport category airplane. It'd be fun to see.

Give me one to land if you want to see how it handles a crash. It's not that I'm not confident in my flying abilities, it's just that comparing a C172 to the heavy metal is like comparing my cats to tigers.

Well, i could, but that poor bird that got in the way of me last sunday sure felt the wrath of the front of my wing going 140 knots....

I dont that bird made a safe landing considering the deposit he left on my plane...hehe.

I so do not get the obsesion with flight sim. I like playing it to, but the people who buy the controll consolls and talk about flying the sim like it's the real thing. They really amaze me.

I've been a pretty hardcore simmer for alot of years now. I don't get crazy with it, but I do play it pretty hard. It's fun, and I enjoy it.

I think I would just head for the salt flats or a dry lake bed if I had to attempt it, there is no way in hell I could get it landed and stopped on a runway safely with only light single exp.

Stop with the low self-esteem remarks

We should get all the people in JC who own (legally or illegally) MS Flight Simulator, and have one big networked game, I think it'd be awsome!

I don't get it either, I get bored with it in about 2 minutes, start trying crazy aerobatics, crash a few times, then turn it off.

The only way I can get through more than 10 minutes of microsoft flight sim is music.

I do know what you mean, though....I feel the same way about sports - but I can't get through 10 seconds.

Sounds like how I land a Seminole.

To all Cessna drivers training on a Seminole-power out, nose down!
