Could You Land A Plane?

Hey RPM nice shades, Oakley Zero red iridium?, had a pair just like 'em, but lost them in Puerto Rico, I went swimming with them on.

I so do not get the obsesion with flight sim. I like playing it to, but the people who buy the controll consolls and talk about flying the sim like it's the real thing. They really amaze me.

I don't get it either, I get bored with it in about 2 minutes, start trying crazy aerobatics, crash a few times, then turn it off.

Hehe, same here.

Oakley Half-Jackets, mostly use the Gold Irridum lenses - best lens ever made in my opinion

I've broken and lost more sunglasses than I can count - my advice is to get a sunglasses sponsor

Why exactly would one go swimming with sunglasses on?

Many moons ago Flying magazine set out to find out the answer to this question.
It invited one of the magazines editor,PPL IR NO multi time and about 500 hrs TT.to fly the B-727 sim ,no worm ups or practice runs. The plane was crusing in the uper 20' AP engaged and about 1hr from destination. The pilot was in contact with ATC who was able to give some technical information to the pilot and vectors for nav.
I dont remember the details but the bottom line was that this guy with no previous experience in the B727 or the sim was able to bring it down and land safely
smile.gif
,the WX was kept decent VMC . If i find the old magazine i may post this article

I've thought about this scenario many times... a while back one of my CFIs took me to Lufthansa's training facility in Frankfurt and I flew the 747-400. Without instruction, and no wind, I was able to land the 747 on the runway, it was rough because I tried to flare the 747 like it was a C172. The instructor said that I did a good job. That was a sim, so there weren’t 300 people counting on me to get it right. In real life I am sure things would be different, but if I ever have to land a plane full of people that I am supposed to be a pax on I would expect a job offer from that respective airline.

The fun was over after my first landing because each approach after that included an emergency, whether it was smoke in the cockpit or a bird strike... it was still a blast and I would give it a try in real life, but only if I were everyone's last chance. For the time being, I'll let the Dougs have the controls!

I think I would just head for the salt flats or a dry lake bed if I had to attempt it, there is no way in hell I could get it landed and stopped on a runway safely with only light single exp.

Trust me, as the veteran of hundreds of landings on Rodgers Dry Lake at Edwards, you DON'T want to try that. Even in a familar aircraft, all depth perception is lost below about 75' above the flare. Much more likely you'd either try to flare out at 50' or -50' than be able to judge it right the first time without a chase plane or vehicle to call out altitude.

I would ask atc to get a chief pilot who knows the plane on frequency, then get a block of airspace and do some "slow" flight, turns climbs and descents. get a feel for it. my buddy and i always talk about that situation. i think i could do it with some guidance as far as configuration/speeds etc on approach. the flare though might be pretty weird though....say a prayer.

An 'autoland' is a lot more complicated than pushing the 'autoland' button!
smile.gif
I mean not procedurally, but to get the aicraft to actually execute an autoland is a little more complex than people think.

I'd turn the auto pilot on and sit back and watch

Where is the auto pilot?

How do you turn it on?

Since I just turned it on, and now wer're in a descent, how do I turn It off?

I think a single engine private pilot could keep it right side up and more or less stable while someone else figured out the radios and called for help. After that someone could talk you through turning on the auto pilot and seting up an aproach. The landing flare wouldnt be pretty, but the gear is a lot stronger than most people think, and at that point who cares if you preak something.. Probably you would wind up off end of the runnway, but you'ld be in one piece.

I have seen many -88's do a great 3 point landing.

Doug does the -90 have the same deal as the the -88 as far as having the nose wheel down before deploying thrust reversers.

HMM Here is one for ya. Do you think you could hook up and perform a A/R with only a private license. Granted you would have to be on a military aircraft, and I guess both pilot die, or some crazy jazz like that. Remember its just straight and level flight

Air Refueling? No. Nada. Ain't gonna happen.

None of you guys are exuding any confidence. One thing you wouldn't want to do in that situation is let fear or uncertainty take control. You gotta believe!

Some of you guys crack me up. If it was anything faster/bigger than a single engine trainer, you flight simmers and 200 hour wonders would be smoking holes before you even found an airport to land at.
