Could You Land A Plane?

Let's say something happened to the pilots and there are no other pilots onboard except for you. Even if you're not a pilot, do you think you could land the aircraft if it came down to it?

Josh

I'm frequently the only pilot onboard and the landing usually isn't a problem. Not sure what the big deal is?

Amber could!!

I think that with the help of ATC I probably could, but off of general knowledge I could probably engage and disengage the autopilot and that's about it.

(I have landed an ATR sim at the schoolhouse in DFW, does that count?)

I remember reading a thread on airliners.net exactly like this one. Of course, most of the replies were "yes." Who woulda thunkit?

As for myself, I've only got about 10 hours experience but haven't really started training yet. Getting a Cessna 172 down might be possible; I have an okay understanding of the whole pitch for airspeed/power for altitude thing. If I was near an airport or could figure out how to get to one using a chart, in VMC, there's a slight chance I could get it down and live to post about it on jetcareers.com

. As far as getting a big jet down (like Kurt Russell in Executive Decision), it'd be highly unlikely.

If I wasn't a pilot and there were other people on board why would I have to land the airplane?

I could land a plane with the Boeing autopilot without a problem. The flare would be the trickiest part! I'm not worried about the FMS, MCP, etc. I know that stuff. Hopefully I will get some more hours in the B-747 sim next week. I did last week and the one thing that stood out was just how fast everything happens.

Supposedly back in the 70's an American Airlines ramp guy (Who was a private pilot) decided to take a joy ride in one of their 727's he had a very easy time gettin it off the ground but nearly crashed it on landing!

(He was let go after that incident.)

Ill just say, i dont know... I could probably get it on the runway, but it may look like that MD-88 in that video Doug posted.

I could definately land it. The key word being "CRASH" land it. If I was having a lucky day it might end up on the runway. I guess that is why I am not a pilot yet.

Come on guys, don't you know that flying an airplane is just like riding a bike? It's just harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.

Maybe...

The deciding factor here is what kind of plane are we talking about? I think many people could get a small single engine plane down without killing themselves. The success rate would be even higher if they could get someone on the radio to help explain things to them. An airliner on the other hand is a different story, then I think that only someone who already knows how to fly, has at least their private, would be able to get it down. They would also have to have someone on the radio that knew the sytems of the plane helping them.

I'd like to see a private pilot land an MD-88.

It's the weirdest "flare" attitude on earth and the thing is as stable as trying to stand on a basketball!
