Computer failure at FAA halts all flight operations

The standing joke at 121 airlines is even we don’t read NOTAMS (not true, but for some guys, they don’t).

I’m basing my comments on the amounts of YouTube videos I’ve seen with 91 being, well, 91ing. Things like the amounts of violations that most 121 are exempt from for scheduled 121 service (eg, many TFRs).

hah I actually thought your comment was about 121 pilots.

I heard a story about a certain plane from a certain un-named carrier, that successfully landed in SEA while everyone else was going missed in somewhat recent history. The weather was good enough to land if you hadn't checked the notam :)
 
The notion that anyone *REALLY, THOROUGHLY* checks the 50 pages of 98% mind-numbingly stupid or irrelevant NOTAMs on a 14 hour flight going through like 16 FIRs when they're given an hour and a half to do that AND everything else they have to do is a preposterous fantasy. We all know it. You learn by doing and sort of figure out what pages you should be looking at hardest, but things are going to slip through. The system is dumber than a box of hammers, but institutional inertia and the fear of some apparatchik or bovine institution wearing the brown helmet when someone loses all engines and hits that unlighted crane .5 seconds before they hit an apartment building keeps the stupid thing going. It's the quintessential example of bureaucratic ass-covering trumping rational policy.
 
The Mission+ software we're experimenting with enables you to track read and unread NOTAMS, marke them high/medium/low importance — all so that way, if there are no new NOTAMS or nothing previous marked "high/medium/low" when you just want to see the things you thought were important, they don't appear. But the system is iffy because the issuer will change some innocuous part of the NOTAM and it appears as 'unread' sometimes.

When a printed flight plan from JFK-BUF runs 20 feet of printed crap, something has to change and someone has to do something about it.

I had three feet of "code for perimeter fence on west side guarded construction access gate (whatever) has changed, contact airport authority or point of contact" on an airport once.

The Feds somehow thought it was important for 121 crew to know that he had to change access codes for the dumptruck he wasn't driving and my dispatcher didn't bother removing them if they even could.

The system has been broken forever but no one wants to pay to fix it.

Whoever is in charge of lighting towers and cranes just needs to get better.

I used to go through 25 pages of NOTAMS printed out in the FBO with a highlighter. It was always fun finding a closed runway buried on page 17 of 25.

But yeah 24 pages consisting of that 118 foot crane 7 DME NW from the co-located VOR on the same airport. That was super important to know about. Oh and gasp! Nonstandard taxiway markings!!!
 
Ive wondered why airline dispatchers can’t or don’t only put pertinent to operation info in the NOTAM releases to crews, and have been told that for liability reasons, they can’t. Not sure the validity of that, or not. I mean, our dispatchers highlight/check pertinent NOTAMS that are in the whole stack anyway, but the rest of them still have to be there apparently.

All NOTAMs are included in the weather packet for our airports. I have no control over what's there. Personally, I do put "significant" NOTAMs (runway closures, approaches out of service) in the remarks section of my releases.

We also have software that will highlight certain keywords that we tell it to, and can also filter down to the pertinent NOTAMs.

But you represent an incredibly small part of aviation as a whole. The rest of the stuff you mentioned has more relevance to the 99% of aviation that doesn’t involve helicopters.

If you want to go looking for unlit towers, then you should be the one who has to search for it. It bears zero relevance for most aviators.

There’s been a couple times I’ve dropped a skydiver and it was fun to file and see the NOTAM for meat missiles during that thirty minute window. “SKYDIVING OPERATIONS IN EFFECT 4000FT AND BELOW PBD FROM VOR YYMMDYTIME-YYMMDYTIME.”

You're not wrong.

I think the NOTAM system could be useful if implemented properly. To me, the issue is about how the information is organized. There should be a filtration mechanism that says, "Categorize ALL of the info, but PRIORITIZE based on operations." We get a tiny taste of that right now using things like ForeFlight and JeppFD because it ties NOTAMS to a relevant airport in the software and improves the signal-to-noise ratio greatly.

But a broad, top-level filtration system would be best. Your low-level-rotary-winged-voodoo-rituals would get the unlit towers, cranes and stuff first, and the CAT II, III stuff dropped out or at least dropped to the bottom. The 121 guys would get the FDC NOTAMS for approaches and stuff at the top, and the helicopter stuff at the bottom.

Having information is good, but making it useful should be the goal. @ppragman - if you ever wanted a CS project that could categorize and then organize information for better presentation, this would be your world-changing TED Talk project.
 
I think a big improvement in NOTAMS would be real time edits to approach charts. It's all digital now, why can't this happen?

Closed taxiway or runway? It should be red on the 10-9 or AMM.

Changed minimums? Chart should reflect that, perhaps in red to indicate a change.

Lighting change that prohibits the use of other minimums, line through them and link to the text.

We are still relying on a system designed for teletype machines.

Lots of helos operating out there, and all part of the whole of aviation. Perhaps you should be the one to ask your ops why you’re having to ccmb through pages in the first place, if it’s such a heavy lift. I fly 121 part-time also, and NOTAM review for relevant NOTAMS really isn’t the giant effort that people are making it out to be here with the large amount of sport bitching going on in the thread. Takes a few mins to review them in the flight packet. Slight annoyance? Perhaps. But not some show stopper having to find stuff that’s relevant to what I’m doing on a particular day or in the particular operation I’m having to do that day. Could it be improved? Sure. To save a minute or so of skimming and lessen the paperwork, whether paper or digital.
