He won a safety award for landing his Gulfstream after a complete electrical failure including standby instruments, at night in weather, he went into DCA because he was able to find the Potomac through the clouds and follow it to the airport.

Vinnie Barbarino did that??

After The Right Stuff, my favorite celeb pilot has to be Dennis Quaid. Gordo. Remember guys, he's "the greatest pilot" he ever saw.

I think it's SO funny that nobody seems to relize that John Travolta is not even typed in the 707 he's so famous for! That doesn't mean he can't fly as SIC, which i'm shure he does and probably does well....

[/ QUOTE ]

1) I believe you are wrong about the type rating. But I can't prove it. I'll concede if that's the case, he usually has a crew. He's been flying jets for a long time as PIC.

[/ QUOTE ]

His certificates were posted just a few responses above these posts. He doesn't have a 707 type. The ones on his certificate are:

Type Ratings
P/CE-500 P/G-1159 P/HS-125 P/LR-JET
Limits
CE-500 (VFR ONLY).

There was a rumor running around that he got his 707/720 type pulled for buzzing someone's house, but I cannot find proof of it.

2)It was no rumor about the supposed buzzing. It was in the news at the time. He came low over his own house in Maine and a neighbor complained. I believe the FAA investigated and took no action. His house is isolated out in the country and he didn't break any rules. If I had my own 707 I might tool around VFR a little myself.

3) He just got done doing an around the world promotional flight in his 707 for Quantas. He did a great job at the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers flight. He won a safety award for landing his Gulfstream after a complete electrical failure including standby instruments, at night in weather, he went into DCA because he was able to find the Potomac through the clouds and follow it to the airport.

Finally, he's been an all around great advocate and lover of aviation who's only contributed. So what exactly is your beef with him?

He is just jealous that Travolta pulls more wool then him in that Captains uniform

I don't know how much truth there is to this.

IIRC, the Homeowners Association of said neighborhood made him sell his house for that little stunt.

According to this, he was evicted and the house in question was in the first airpark he lived in. It must take a lot to be evicted by fellow pilots over noise ordinances! It also says Qantas offered him a 747 type in return for letting Qantas use the 707 for promotional purposes. I guess he hasn't taken them up on it yet.

That link doesn't seem very factual. There is no way a 707 could fit into Spruce Creek, there's no where to park it. If I remember right he was just told he can't fly the G-II in there any more because of the noise and decided to leave. He had a house near the one I stay in when we go down. I could be completely wrong though, it wouldn't be the first time

Now he lives (part of the year) in Ocala, Florida where he keeps the 707. Its pretty neat, if you ever fly over it, it looks like he almost parks the sucker in his garage.

Why he picked Ocala, I have no idea......

Yeah I'm starting to think twice about posting that. I read further down that page where some comments were posted and it seems someone with the screename "JT" posted. Then a bunch of people came out of the woodwork asking to become his flight attendent and asking him to come hang out with him. I'm sure this "JT" character is now laughing his ass off.

So ehh yeah, I'm not sure how credible that is either....

Whats wrong with Ocala? I grew up there. People think because I am from there I am married to my sister and believe in UFO's. Well I am here to set the record straight. We only dated, and I am still not 100% sure it wasn't a weather balloon.
Anyhow I double checked and Carlton Beauford has his PPL and took a few rides in a biplane. Sorry.

Slater: "You're insane!"

Travolta: "Yeah.....ain't it cool?"

Slater: "No, I mean you've really gone off the deep end."

Travolta: "That maybe, but I'm still going to kick your ass!"

Another scene:

Travolta to guy shooting at the boms stealers:

"Would you mind not shooting the thermonuclear weapons?"

I got no beef against Jonh T, I think he is a good guy and a good actor. I just wish he would ditch the uniform when in public, that's all.

Thanks flyin....I was wondering if anyone was gonna pick up on that

Best line in the movie:

"Now you can deal with me, Col. Nakir Nakesh....And you can deal with me, Doug Masters!"
