Wayne newton has a really ugly Jetranger, its blue and purple with really low skids so he can park in his garage. Carter Beauford the drummer from Dave Matthews band flies a biplane or something, I think.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nah, that Jet Ranger is owned by Marie Calender - it often takes them to their jet at LGB, and other Socal stuff. It is pretty nice inside.

Not sure, where you heard Carter had a biplane. Unless it is something new I had never heard of it, and I knew of most people there, especially if they had a cool plane.

I think his name is Michael Dorf, he was on star trek

Michael Dorn ... he's in an AOPA promotional video on their website, I believe for Project Pilot.

I think Tom Cruise was working on his PPL at some point.

I saw Tom on Inside the Actors Studio, and he talked about flying for a little bit (he had to be led into it). He said he likes to tool around in his P-51.

Any time I see a celeb on TV that mentions being a pilot, I always try to look them up in the FAA registry and see what kind of ratings and stuff they have. It has been a while ago now, but John Travolta said in an interview once that he was "became" a 747 pilot while doing the Qantas stunt. I looked him up in the registry, and he doesn't have a type rating for that aircraft or his 707. I can't remember for sure, but he might not even be instrument rated. I think the few type ratings he has are listed as VFR only. Been a while since I looked at it.

Aunt Bee! ...anybody remember that one?

Iowa, did you know James Lipton is a pilot himself?

If you watch the interview he did with Robin Williams, Robin notices the AOPA pin on Jame's lappel (sp?), and starts doing a whole bit about it. (you know how he is, the man never stays in his seat...gotta love him)

Anyway, besides watching the classic Lipton on Lipton (Will Ferrell), if you catch the one with Travolta, they talk about flying for a while.

Are any athletes into flying?

My man Chad Hennings.......

Thurmon Munson was one also, until 1979.

The great Yankees catcher Thurman Munson was killed in the crash of his own Citation jet, which he was flying, in 1979. This was at the peak of his career and it literally stunned the country. There was a lot of talk about "not allowing" people to fly their own airplanes "just because they could afford it". Of course that quickly died down. But it was true that Munson wasn't very experienced. After that I think a lot of contracts had "can't fly your own airplane" clauses.

I also read an article about an ex Buffalo Bill that was flying for Eagle a few years ago.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think this was Jim Richer, not sure of the spelling. He was an offensive lineman for the Bills.

Hennings was a Major in the USAFR as of about 2 years ago. Don't know if he still is. 45 missions in Desert Storm flying A-10s; when assigned to the A-10s of the 511th at Alconbury.

I think it's SO funny that nobody seems to relize that John Travolta is not even typed in the 707 he's so famous for! That doesn't mean he can't fly as SIC, which i'm shure he does and probably does well. Still, it really makes him look stupid wearing a Captain's uniform when he's not even typed in the thing. There was a rumor running around that he got his 707/720 type pulled for buzzing someone's house, but I cannot find proof of it.

I have met John, he was a very nice and friendly person, and I admire his love of aviation. But dude, ditch the uniform! I have to wear one at work and I would love it if I didn't have to.

Who is the dude with Angelina Jolie? Did you just find that photo on the net or do you know him? Pretty lucky guy. Sweet plane too.

I think Travolta's jet is down in San Antonio by some maintenance hangar. I tried to get a camera phone photo of it, but it didn't work well.

Yeah, it's here all the time. 7Q7 is always working on it. They are across rwy 3 from the terminal.

Each time I tried to get a photo last month, it'd be too dark or we'd be departing runway 3 so it was very time-compressed.

1) I believe you are wrong about the type rating. But I can't prove it. I'll concede if that's the case, he usually has a crew. He's been flying jets for a long time as PIC.

2)It was no rumor about the supposed buzzing. It was in the news at the time. He came low over his own house in Maine and a neighbor complained. I believe the FAA investigated and took no action. His house is isolated out in the country and he didn't break any rules. If I had my own 707 I might tool around VFR a little myself.

3) He just got done doing an around the world promotional flight in his 707 for Quantas. He did a great job at the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers flight. He won a safety award for landing his Gulfstream after a complete electrical failure including standby instruments, at night in weather, he went into DCA because he was able to find the Potomac through the clouds and follow it to the airport.

Finally, he's been an all around great advocate and lover of aviation who's only contributed. So what exactly is your beef with him?
