GON was my first solo X/C. From ORH. I ended up doing plenty of flying in the winter way back then, it isn't actually that bad.

The problem in the winter on LI is the winds. 25g40+ is very common. The winds start picking up in late October/November and pretty much blows til April

GON also my first solo XC from ISP. Will probably be @NovemberEcho's as well if he hasn't done it yet

Edit: Probably a much more difficult XC from ORH. From ISP just follow the north shore of LI it is practically an arrow right at GON.

Yep did it last week. Was supposed to go to KPOU today but my instructor had to cancel so going there on Thursday and N51 or FWN on Friday. Gonna get my Class B endorsement then too.

why stop at n51 when there is a great restaurant at n40...
and I'm off and can take photos/give you vectors on CTAF

Oops, can’t do it. You need to add 100’ to the runway for my school to let me go there. They don’t let anyone (including renters) take their planes to a runway under 3000’
 
I am based at N51. We are waiting for runway refurbishment and extensions. I would suggest 47N they have longer paved runway and a pizza place nearby. I've never seen a deer on their runway. There was a student pilot on a x-country stuck at my airport for hours. A college kid. Hit a deer and was waiting for his school mechanic to assess.

You weren't supposed to scare him away. NE is learning to fly at the same flight school I learned.
