Best Restaurant by Airport…

Eating is cool (or at least necessary), but if you ever stray through KLOU, you're basically obliged to cross the street and drink at Air Devil's Inn. I haven't been there for years, but I somehow suspect little has changed. $2.50 well drinks which are surprisingly only-slightly-watered-down and ~50/50 booze to mixer ratio, true dive-bar atmosphere (not hipsters trying to have a dive bar atmosphere, genuine hard-luck cases drinking from noon on), and if you time it right a lot of local talent singing Townes Van Zandt and the like. Somewhere right between Mussel Shoals and, say, Elkhardt, it's a legit Kentucky Experience. Yeehaw, etc.

I remember a bar located at an small airport in central Florida (ocala?) that had a beer drinking pig.

  • Charleys at JGG makes their own soup and bread. Outstanding sandwiches.
  • Tailwinds Cafe at KMRB is solid. Breakfast all day.
  • Can't-remember-the-name-of-the-place at GED but it was pretty great.
  • Fiorentino's at LNS is pretty good - not too many solid Italian restaurants right on the field.

I'd like to try out the steakhouse at LBE - supposedly it's outstanding. Just haven't made the run up there yet. Got a student from that neck of the woods, maybe I can talk the Chief into approving it as a 141 destination....

For those unaware, “Coney Island” is local Detroit term for hot dog/hamburger/diner. Detroit has them all over, and generally the food is awesome/cheap/plentiful.

Similarly, don't order a steak in Philly and expect a ribeye.

really, you shouldn't be eating those anyway. Though they're delicious, they're total tourist food. If you wanted to get one, skip Geno's and Pat's and all that junk. Go to Ishkabibble's.

Cafe Rio in SLC. I’ll always get something from there even if I’m not hungry. Unfortunately it’s now in the new terminal, which means you’ll need to hire a Sherpa to get there if you’re coming from the Delta side of the airport.

I rather enjoyed Mike's downtown, for the same reason you cite not going to Geno's or Pat's.

I forget the place's name and if it's still there at Carlsbad, CA (@Autothrust Blue would know) was really good.
Hijacker's at Flagler X47 was staple when i was learning to fly.

Now the layovers are much further from the airport so don't get to do the $100 hamburger much these days,.
I don’t recall off hand but I hope it is. The place was VERY good.
