Azerbaijan Airlines Crash

If this happened the way it looks like it happened the flight crew are absolute heroes.

One could argue that being refused an emergency landing clearance should have been followed by “I’m sorry, you’re breaking up” but I’ve thought about this kind of situation a lot since learning about United 232, if I’m going to try to land a plane with major flight control issues, I’d like to spend some time figuring out the new characteristics before purposefully taking it anywhere near the ground.

It’s incredible that anyone survived.
I wish we’d do more “Conditions beyond the scope of abnormal checklist” things in training, as long as the simulator dynamics are a go for them.

Edit: stab trim is electric on that airplane, so you could conceivably still have pitch control.

100%. It'll probably all get lost in the politics, but they're right up there with Al Haynes and those A300 studs in Iraq in the Pantheon of "recent aviation heroes". 29 people walking (ok, maybe not walking, yet) around because those guys were Airmen.

Looks like the politicing is already getting started?

An oxygen tank on the Azerbaijan Airlines flight exploded before the crash, minister says

Was Oxygen Cylinder, all along! Cause so-called "shrapnel" damage when, how you say, "burst", yes? West then blame on Glorious Russian Air Defense, yes?

Look for Tucker to pick this one up.
I'm mostly competent on fabric airplanes but it'll be cool hearing how the O2 tank rupturing caused shrapnel to enter the fuselage because those pictures look like entry wounds.

O2 tanks don’t generally rupture/explode, their valve assemblies will fail first as a weak point, if they don’t vent first. These tanks are fairly solid.

They could possibly explode, however, if the tank integrity itself is compromised. Such as being penetrated by something.

The O2 tanks are in the forward part of the aircraft, in front of the wing and behind the flight deck. They have a burst disc located on the front right side of the airplane, in front of the forward cargo compartment.

They are nowhere near the empennage, and there's an entire airplane between the two points.

There are POBs in the cabin, of course. Those certainly could explode if penetrated by shrapnel, but I can't help think that it's fairly unlikely.

No O2 tank on the airplane can result in the fragmentation damage seen in the pictures.

But KAL 007 certainly ran into that Russian missle! HOW DARE THEY! :)

I wouldn't claim to be far-sighted enough to have picked my screen-name based on the extrapolated Future, but if I had, I would be a freaking genius. You go to Gulag, get Navalny-treatment, yes?

A propos to nothing, but The Economist did a thing on 2024 deaths, and Navalny was, of course, in there. What an absolute hero. If, perhaps, also a reminder that the good guys don't always win.

i will never understand why he went back to Russia voluntarily.

I mean kinda the same reason Zelenskyy didn't run when he had every reason and the chance. They are (were) True Believers. IMHO, it's now up to us to be worth believing in. Navalny thought better of us than we think of ourselves, but that's our choice.

Meh. Zelensky was most effective in ukriane by being in Ukraine. Navalany was never going to be effective in Russia by being in Russia.

This also might be the first airliner brought down by a bird strike causing damage to the O2 bottles, if you believe the Kremlin’s narrative.

Has anyone seen or heard if the FDR/CVR were sent back to Brazil? I did see a comment that normally agencies in the region lean on Russia’s accident investigative board, but would be a conflict on interest in this case.
