Azerbaijan Airlines Crash

There are POBs in the cabin, of course. Those certainly could explode if penetrated by shrapnel, but I can't help think that it's fairly unlikely.

No O2 tank on the airplane can result in the fragmentation damage seen in the pictures.
clearly a case of debris from the O2 tank getting caught in the spiraling slipstream and impacting the empanage from the inside.

The airplane involved, 4K-AZ65 s/n 19000630, was made when noted Chechens, the Tsarnaev brothers, perpetrated their bombing of the Boston Marathon. It has always been operated by Azerbaijan.

I wouldn't claim to be far-sighted enough to have picked my screen-name based on the extrapolated Future, but if I had, I would be a freaking genius. You go to Gulag, get Navalny-treatment, yes?

A propos to nothing, but The Economist did a thing on 2024 deaths, and Navalny was, of course, in there. What an absolute hero. If, perhaps, also a reminder that the good guys don't always win.
I see lots of people do something deemed "the right thing" and then are immediately lauded on social media, real media, and are invariably asked about their "toughness" and "the hard times" and such...before they ever really had any. And they end up sitting on Taylor's lap at a Chiefs game almost immediately after their act of "courage" and then buy a million-dollar house with the riches they got from the GoFundMe and stuff. Forgetting that John Lewis got nearly beat to death, MLK wrote "A letter from the Birmingham Jail" while actually in jail, Rosa Parks got arrested and Navalny (and so many others) died. I guess it's a pet peeve. Navalny should have been Man of the Year. And his wife is as metal, or more, than he was. Love her.

Just out of curiosity I went to the most reliable of news sources RT:
All they had on the Russian language version of their homepage was a small blurb hidden in a timeline:

In order to ensure the safety of flights, temporary restrictions were imposed on the reception and dispatch of flights at Kazan airport, Rosaviation representative Artem Korenyako said.
«S 06:00 msk temporary restrictions imposed on the operation of Kazan» airport, — wrote he's on his Telegram channel.

The day before was introduced temporary restrictions on flights at airports Makhachkala, Vladikavkaz and Grozny.

From Makhachkala airport delayed the departure of five flights.

And on the English version an actual article with, shockingly, no mention of Russian involvement:

Azerbaijan airlines names ‘likely’ cause of plane crash

The company has suspended flights from Baku to several Russian cities after the accident near Aktau due to “potential flight safety risks”

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has named “technical external interference” as the likely cause of a plane crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan, that killed dozens of passengers on December 25, 2024. Flights to several Russian cities have been suspended as the investigation continues.

The Embraer 190, operating as flight J2-8243 from Baku to Grozny, was diverted to Aktau due to heavy fog near its destination. The crash occurred while attempting an emergency landing, killing 38 of the 67 people on board. The passengers included citizens from Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

In an official statement, AZAL pointed to “physical and technical external interference” as the preliminary cause of the crash but provided no further details.

Previously, local officials had also suggested that the tragedy may have been caused by a bird strike. There are also reports claiming that an oxygen cylinder exploded on board at the time of impact, with many passengers being rendered unconscious.

The incident is being jointly investigated by Azerbaijani and Kazakh aviation authorities. AZAL has temporarily suspended flights to several Russian cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg, citing safety concerns.

On Friday, Russian aviation authorities revealed why the doomed Grozny-bound plane diverted to Kazakhstan. Dmitry Yadrov, head of the Russian aviation agency Rosaviatsiya, stated that the flight crew was unable to land in Grozny because the airport there was temporarily closed due to Ukrainian drone attacks. Poor weather conditions also contributed to problems on the ground, he added. Russia has expressed full readiness to cooperate with Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan in the ongoing investigation into the crash.

Azerbaijan declared December 26, 2024, a national day of mourning for the victims of the crash. President Ilham Aliyev returned to Baku from an official visit to lead an emergency meeting. A moment of silence was observed nationwide, and various cultural and sporting events were postponed in honor of those who lost their lives.

The Embraer 190, manufactured in Brazil, is a widely used regional jet. Embraer has stated it will support investigators and provide technical expertise during the inquiry.

On the day of the crash, a Ukrainian drone hit a shopping mall in the city of Vladikavkaz, with one woman killed in the explosion. Officials in Chechnya also reported a Ukrainian drone raid on Grozny, noting that all of the UAVs had been shot down.

The article you quoted does say this:

“Russia has expressed full readiness to cooperate with Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan in the ongoing investigation into the crash.”

Now, to what degree that will actually come true, if any, remains to be seen.

Lmao they shart all over any international cooperation yet we are gonna give them the benefit of the doubt they’re going to do it this time?

Charlie Brown, I don’t think Lucy is gonna change bro.

What benefit of the doubt? I’m sure not holding my breath based on their statement.

AFAICT, Navalny knew full-well what the odds were. He did it anyway. Crazy? Yeah, maybe. Brave to the point of legit Heroism? Undeniably (imho).

I think this was a discretion over valor opportunity personally. His death hasn’t accomplished anything. Living and continuing to be a source of resistance would have been much more useful imo. Oh well, no point debating something already over.

Hard to argue with the shrapnel-splash on the irritatingly semi-intact airframe. I think Vlad's not-quite-an-admission-of-guilt will be as far as this one goes. It'll be behind the fold on B11 by next week. Just another woopsie mass-murder for CC to wave his hands around and attempt to excuse!

I don’t know if Putin will be able to write this one off if Azerbaijan pushes the issue. Politically, Russia needs Azerbaijan far more than Azerbaijan needs Russia.

It's allowed TFG to compare his treatment to that of Navalny.

You're not wrong. Maybe, as long as we keep talking about Navalny, he's not really gone; that is, after all, part of the point of martyrdom.

I personally suspect that Azerbaijan will have all sorts of reasons to let it go. The reasons are denominated in rubles.

Azerbaijan is smart enough to take a soft apology and call it a day. Nothing is to be gained by attempting to leverage anything more.

Azerbaijan doesn’t need Russia or its rubles, its top trade partners are Italy and Turkey only because it’s tough to accurately determine what European countries are receiving Azerbaijani oil.

Azerbaijan is interesting in that it doesn’t need anybody and a dozen countries would take up arms in its defense, unlike Ukraine.

Azerbaijan is playing chess while others are playing checkers. Azerbaijan carefully plays the non-aligned card, keeping Russia happy by not buying F-16’s and flirting with NATO.

Strong trade and amiable diplomacy with the west while maintaining good relationships with Russia, Turkey, Iran. and Israel. National and ethnic identity calms Sunni-Shia divide. Fascinating.

Maybe but they also just announced that Russian passport holders will be limited to 90 days in country within a year. Currently it is unlimited. This is technically in response to Russia changing their rule first, but that change was announced months ago, and Azerbaijan me their announcement two days after the shoot down and just 2 days before the change goes into effect.

Azerbaijan isn’t taking the stage at the United Nations soliciting a UN resolution or sanctions.

A bit of tit for tat. Even Russia has to think that’s a very measured response.
