ATP Final Rule Signed

 ?

If you now hold an ATP, then you already exceed all of the requirements. None of the new requirements exceed the old standard ATP requirements. Also once you hold a certificate it never expires (CFI being the exception).

As was posted, I don't have 50 MEL, but hold a ATP-MEL.

Not true. I think he has less than 50 multiengine hours, but he does have ATP with multi-engine land privileges. Thus he has an ATP but doesn't have the 50 hours required for an unrestricted ATP under the new legislation.

I missed that.

However, once you hold a certificate then the FAA can only revoke or suspend it for a violation of the FARs.

"In setting the criterion for 60 semester credit hours in aviation and aviation-related coursework, the FAA decided to allow partial recognition for applicants with bachelor’s degrees with aviation majors who fall short of the 60 credit hour requirement. Applicants who have completed at least 30 semester credit hours in aviation and aviation-related coursework designed to improve and enhance the knowledge and skills of a person seeking a career as a professional pilot may apply for an R-ATP certificate with 1,250 hours total time as a pilot. The applicant’s coursework must include all of the ground and flight training for a commercial pilot certificate and Instrument rating." Page 92

Looks like if your under 23 and have at least 30 aviation/aviation-related credit hrs you qualify for a R-ATP. Helps a little bit for sure.

Am I interpreting this right?

I didn't read every page so don't jump on me but if I read that right the new written test course doesn't apply till July 31, 2014

So according to the document each flight school has to apply to be able to academically certify that their applicants are eligible for the restricted ATP, be it a 1000 or 1250 hour license. Can anyone guess how long this process will take? With all the paperwork involved I wouldn't be surprised if it was over a year if not two.

I guess this is the end of part 61 training and small schools. Universities with 141 training are going to bank on this.

I disagree... I don't think this will affect Part61 schools much at all. There are students (the overwhelming majority of them actually) who have no interest in being commercial pilot. Most of the training I do (at my Part141 school no less) is for students seeking a private or instrument rating and that's it.

There will always be a market for non-141 programs.

I want to agree with you, but based on my experience in various markets aroind the country, the market is dwindling, at best. This only helps further the decline by taking those few career oriented students out of the picture. Maybe some fun in the sun seaplane rating shops, but 61 training has been dying, 9/11 was a gut shot, and while bleeding out this I think puts it pretty much out of its misery.

That's correct. You could theoretically wait until July 30th 2014 to take the ATP written and not be subject to the ATP CTP requirement.

Again... I couldn't disagree more with this view. I see way more 61 students than 141 these days. Just not 61 guys who are interested in becoming professional pilots. I actually think we will see a resurgence in private and light sport pilots in the coming years.

You need to have graduated with the aviation major. The 30 aviation credits alone won't cut it, according to my interpretation of the rule.

Edit: Also looks like the commercial and instrument rating must come from an associated part 141 school.

Meaning... if someone hypothetically graduates with a 2 year degree in airport management/generic aviation major and completes their flight training on their own (not related to the college, even if 141), they would not qualify for the R-ATP.

So if I don't have my ATP written done by next month... What are the consequences?

Well if you work where I work, you're fired.

That said, if you don't already have an ATP, nothing - but say my written had expired - since I'm a 121 employee, it doesn't matter, merely that I've passed it at one time or another.

(HINT).

I hope youre right, I just see more and more 61 shops shutting down, and freelance CFIs becoming Toyota salesmen to make ends meet. Maybe its just the places I have been.
