Aircraft crashes into building in NYC

Exceptionally funny was when when the news reporter said that "the plane was flying at extremely and dangerously low alititudes." THAT's when I walked away from the TV. They said the pilot broke the FARs by not being in contact with ATC all the time. An "expert" indicated that pilots are not allowed to fly around NYC without talking to ATC and as such, this airplane was in violation of the FAA.

Any other stupid things you guys hear?

Our mayor Bloomberg seemed to know more about aviation than this so-called "expert."

This was CNN, btw...

What I don't get is that those helicopters circle the city ready to shoot down any aircraft violating the restricted airspace over the city. Why didn't they try to shoot him down when they saw him?I'm guessing because of the low visibility. PS , I heard it was the yankee pitcher flying with an instructor (if this was posted already sorry I didnt read I had to type quickly).

Ummm, yes, there are "helicopters" flying over the city to shoot people down. Yeah, that's it....

The helicopters flying over the city are corporate or charter helicopters. Ever been to teterboro or white plains? You know you've made it when you take your S-76 from your downtown office building to your G-IV hangered at white plains.

ok sorry for the late post but i was next door at the hospital for special surgery. i was getting a check up on my foot when the nurse comes in and says a plane hit the building my heart sunk since i cant move fast at all right now. well we found out it was the apartments next door but my car is still in the city in the parking lot under the hospital. hopefully tomorrow i can pick it up. it was a freaky thing coming outside and seeing the burning. may the deceased rest in peace.

Yeah, that looks like a helicopter... Do the eyewitnesses just make up stuff? Maybe they were watching Airwolf at the time?

You kiddin'? There are still people who say that they weren't airliners that hit the WTC in 2001. Conspiracy kooks base their wacko theories on the word of folks who think they were missiles, small aircraft, fighters, and any number of things.

im a pretty realistic guy, but the pentagon thing still doesnt add up for me.

quote from AP article...

"The whole plane has a parachute on it," Lidle said. "If you're up in the air and something goes wrong, you pull that parachute, and the whole plane goes down slowly."

Is this the thought process that has been a contributing cause to some of the Cirrus accidents. I think it really over simplifies the complex systems of the planes....

All famous persons MUST complete instrument training before they can get their PPL. In other words, famous student pilots can't get a PPL without the /IA.

Any thoughts?

Far more "non-famous" people crash than do famous people. That wouldn't do anything but drive some CFI's to the bread line.

Here's a good one, too:
The Cirrus SR20 was manufactured in 2002 and purchased earlier this year, Hersman said. The small aircraft has four seats and is equipped with a parachute designed to let it float to earth in case of a mishap. The parachute apparently did not engage after the crash.

AFTER the crash? Yeah, that would help a lot! I see something out of a Road Runner cartoon--Wile E. Coyote jumps off a cliff, frantically pulling a rip cord... then just after he smacks into the bottom of the canyon.... POOF! There comes the chute.

I'm not quite sure why you guys get all worked up about some TV networks working at selling ad time....

:insane:

Because uninformed handwringing generally starts because of uninformed reporting. And when people who write legislation start thinking about banning GA aircraft from cities, well, they make bad decisions. I'm not saying it's happening yet, but it's a slippery, slippery slope.

They may be trying to sell ad space, but you can spin stuff for drama and still be accurate. Most of the news is flat effin' wrong here and they need to be corrected.

It wasn't until I started reading JC that I found out that the main reason for the BRS was to pull it in the event of a spin. Right? But I'm wondering if all Cirrus owners know this....

A car accidentally crashed into a nearby Sears the other day. SOUND THE ALARMS!!! No cars should EVER be allowed to drive near buildings!!! :sarcasm:

All this talk about why planes shouldn't be allowed near NYC is based on ignorance. Especially disturbing is the "Former NTSB Director's" comment below...

He was the NTSB director and didn't know about the VFR Corridor! Come On!!

He KNOWS planes fly up and down and around NYC all the time. The VFR Corridors are a fun and easy way to get through NYC's Class B and I've done it a few times... You don't need a flight plan and don't talk to ATC, you are on the "River CTAF" and self reporting your position to everyone else. Lidle was probably just doing a sight seeing flight around NYC and had a problem with the plane... it happens. Unfortunately he hit a building when he crashed...

If I hear one more uniformed voice making a big deal out of this I'm going to explode...

As has been famously pointed out, Jim Hall's only qualification for his post was he had held a driver's license for several years. It was cronyism pure and simple that got him that post. And he did not distinguish himself as head of the NTSB. But now he's one of our preeminent experts on all things aviation!!

I'm surprised that not one news channel has a retired airline pilot, ex-military guy, or someone with real experience as their aviation go-to person. You'd think if they were actually committed to getting the story right, they'd find a reliable source of accurate information.

Channel 5 morning news here in New York City reported the news fairly and accurately as possible (I was SHOCKED!!!) It just so happens that the weatherman Nick Gregory is a pilot AND flight instructor (just like channel 4's Chuck Scarborough, who's father was a B-17 pilot) and shared what he knew about VFR regulations and more imporatantly DECISION MAKING!!!! Thank GOD for those guys, I'm sure he kept reasonably intelligent people from calling their congressperson this morning. Anyway, the female co-anchor would ACT like she understands, then ask the transporation security expert something like "I can't take more than 3 ounces of shampoo on board an airliner, but small planes can fly around Manhattan, does that make sense?).
The gentleman said, very politely "Not if you take that point of view" and then makes some other points that really shattered her insistence that small a/c are unsafe at least aroung major cities. I thought, "Yeah, stick THAT to her". I really was about to jump through the screen and shake some actual sense into her. Anyway, as a Yankee fan, I can get over the ALDS loss (We WILL win it eventually:-)), but to hear that another fellow pilot AND flight instructor lost their lives AND that Corey Lidle was the pilot gave me a "punch in the gut" feeling. I almost did tear up at my job. My condolences to his family and friends, and of course, his soon to be fans of the Yankee family.

That's cute. How many more billions of payroll before you guys actually perform? You're currently at what... 1.5 billion without a WS ring?
Cosidering that the 2 people perished, you still find time to make fun of our franchise. You can add me to the list of people that u pissed off. As a Christian though I'll pray for you. And before you go and tell all your friends how sensitive us right wing Yankee lovers are, unlike most franchises if not a matter of IF they win, but WHEN. Of course there's no prediction as far as WHEN, but it will be BEFORE the 80 plus year mark. And no, Steinbrenner didn't ruin baseball, he just pays what he hopes will win it for us. There is a communistic "revenue sharing" systems that is set in place, which takes MOSTLY Yankee money, and money from a few other franchises (maybe Boston) and puts it into a nice pot so that some other team be the next hot Yankee clone of the year (This years Detroit, by their OWN admission.), it's not Boss George's fault that alot of owners pocket the cash and not put it into their teams. Imagine though, would United or American share their cash with, I don't know SONG? Hmmm.
