I have known a few pilots hired directly to major cargo carriers (FedEx), but they were flying Convairs.

I know someone who did exactly that! But they had a really good rec and some 727 time.

This guy did not have any jet time, but did know someone. Gets back to always looking and acting professional when in an aviation environment. You never know who you will run into or who is looking for a pilot.
