AA TA?

:)

That's great! You don't know now many people go on and on about how they have weekends off, just cranked out a puppy or two with the wife, bought a house in their growing and bustling base and how he cant afford the "pay cut" to go to a major...

Hell, I'm hardly certain my job is going to be here Monday morning, I sure as hell wouldn't feel any better if I flew subcontracted flying.

That's EXACTLY why I am hoping to escape some day. While I'm very comfortable with where I am, there is way too much outside of my control. Last summer, management decides to try to get by with minimal staffing, performance is dismal, supposedly raises the attention of our mainline partners resulting in an email to us from our DO saying "ERMYGERD! I command you to not suck! Otherwise we're screwed!"

As if we're sitting around going "yeah...screw this place, I don't feel like being on time." Instead, the finger can only be pointed at those who run the place. Airplane is broke? We're not flying it till you fix it. Captain calls in sick for an early morning flight and you guys don't have any reserves on duty that early in the morning? Your fault.

At least at a mainline carrier if management decides they don't feel like trying, the survival of your company only sort of depends on your on time performance. As long as people keep buying tickets (and we all know price is the only driving factor) you're probably going to be ok.

Yeah, it's getting to about that point. Actually had a Captain tell me that the other day. Granted, he also assumed the gritting of my teeth was entirely a matter of who was in command. It clearly had nothing to do with feeling like I was a flying with an 8 year old on a sugar rush that never shut up. Nah, that was in no way irritating, or something the FA asked me how I tolerated. Clearly, I just need to upgrade. ;)
I found pushing in on the interphone dial-push button makes it much more tolerable on that airplane, since you can't hear over the whistling poop-can noise.

That is one of the best parts about this job. Coworker starts talking crazy, you can turn their volume down and nod occasionally to make it seem like you are listening.

I didn't phrase that very well. I actually said that to the people interviewing me. I assume anybody who was there for an interview already was trying to get out of their current gig.

Once in the WSCOD, the interphone part of the audio panel quit. It was quite entertaining for about five minutes, and then we realized we had to shout at each other for the rest of the flight.

Work like hell until the name on the paycheck matches the name on the side of the jet, else it can all vanish suddenly.

Your logic doesn't always carry- ex: TWA, Braniff, Eastern... The game can change on anyone, anytime, anywhere. The real question is- regardless of where you are or what you fly- is the compensation and benefits package you get for the time and effort you invest really worth your time? Are you living to work or working to live?

As for this 'control over your life or too much out of your control' idea... Until the name on the side of the plane is *your* name, you're still at the mercy of someone else who may or may not have your interests at heart. Each rung on the ladder has its place and its worth. A ladder with only one rung isn't a ladder- it's a gallows.

Of course, everybody loves the choice they made the most. So cheers to that, and good luck.

Add a mortgage and a car then then bleak reality of having to go to work becomes much more apparent.

It's probabilities. TWA had a nice single engine descent and people retired early, left for greener pastures or went down with the ship when it was picked up by American. I have some friends that got hired there during their bankruptcy but they were under no delusion that they were going to rack up some flight time and motor on to a healthier carrier.

The chances of, say, United being around for 20 more years is significantly higher than American Eagle. AMR could just as easily "Comair" Eagle and a lot of good people, many tenured and comfy, are flat out of a job with a stroke of a pen.

Seriously, I wouldn't suggest developing a case of "Regional Airline Stockholm Syndrome". In the world of global alliances, capacity outsourcing and such, I can get Comaired or you can get Comaired. I strongly feel there will always be a high possibility of getting Comaired when the passengers in the back of the aircraft didn't surf to (your employer).com to purchase their tickets.

I'm not developing or advocating RASS at all.. Just suggesting that there is no magic bullet (as many have), but for some reason when the career prospects of an airline pilot comes up, the 'safe haven' is always said to be a Legacy.

Ain't no such thing, brotha. We're all a pen stroke away from unexpected unemployment.

That's more or less the plan. Granted, I'd prefer not to relocate my life just to change the name of my employer.. I intend to be picky.

A lot of people were being 'picky' because they wanted to fly for Southwest so they got a fancy type rating. Now Southwest has stopped hiring and people are out of a lot of money among other issues.

But they got the type, so I guess they got something for their money.
