A serious issue: a lack of free hotel pens

I can't really use the hotel pens because I like the have my pen hooked right onto my ID lanyard. I'd use the top and have nowhere to put the pen if I used the hotel ones. I use the old reliable pilot G-20 pens. As far as note pads go....I just use the old nav log papers as scratch paper.:)

Same here. Use the one on my uniform all the time, however, I like to keep a hotel pen (I prefer clicker ones if I can find them) either stuck in the pen holder or in the top of my flight case for those <drops pen> moments...

Yeah, I'm a clicker fan, too. In fact, Nessa normally winds up "accidentally putting them in her purse" b/c she likes them, too. This normally results in me tearing the house apart looking for a pen 5 minutes before I have to leave for work. The few I have left are running out of ink.

My wife does the same thing. Never can find a pen when I need one.

That being said, Doug, if you have a few extra JC pens laying around...... :)

I was thinking the same thing...:D

If your notepad doesn't have a hotel chain, your pen with some logo and you actually dropped $.75 to buy that paper that no one likes, but we all read, USA Today, you're doing it wrong.
You guys got me hooked with the Parker Jotter Ball pens (with the FlightSafety logo) that were in the NJC goody bags a few years back. Somebody borrowed mine and never gave it back, so I had to go buy a replacement or three. Love those things. And they're James Bond-approved! (Well, the all-stainless version is, but I'm not THAT pretentious!)

So if you've got any extras of THOSE lying around....lol!

I know it's tradition for pilots to use the pens outta the hotels, but I never lost the pens I had with me from my days at Amflight! I just kept the thing in my uniform pocket without question and it never seemed to get lost. In fact I'm still using that same pen I had for my year at Express.

Okay, serious quesition...do airline pilot uniform shirts have a place for a pen? Is it in the standard "nerd pocket" spot"?

Yep and yep.

The only redeeming quality of most Hiltons are the pens. Only got one in my last three visits...I think wheelsup is on to something!

After first month of flying 121 and spent at different hotels, I felt like those Nerd in NASA footage - White Shirt, Blackties and a lot of "hotel pens". :p

Pens are like socks in the washing machine. Where do they go?

I seem to either have 20 pens or none. Most of the time they're huddled in the same spot, too. (all in my handbag or on a countertop/drawer.)

Nooo....Airline pilots aren't cheapskates....not at ALL....

...it probably comes from those days as broke flight instructors...

Indeed my pen is kept in the pen pocket on the left side, calculator inside that same pocket. Worked well at for both freight and airline gigs.

I mean you've gotta admit, airline pilot uniforms already make you look like a complete dork; why not just complete the package?

I hate that hat most of all. The other day I was riding the shuttle from the hotel I use when I commute. There were some mainline f/a's and one of them tried to give me a dollar as we got off because she thought I was the driver out of the corner of her eye. I was going to take it but she figured it out.

Hotel pens suck, I find they hardly ever work at all so I carry these

i am more of an f-301 original kind of a guy. i know the hotel pen thing is tradition but i need a good weight when writing. call me a snob i guess.

If I don't have a good pen I can't read what I write...even with a good pen sometimes its questionable

"Ok, we're cleared to Atlanta via....ummm.....can you read that again?"

I'm not an airline pilot yet but I think I am on the right track then. When I worked the Ramp I always collected all the hotel pens in my room everyday. I also would go onto an empty plane and find magazines, newspapers, and lunch for free! It has carried over into college cause I haven't bought any pens yet.

I can't stand writing with cheap ball-point pens.

So I carry my own pens that I'm comfortable writing with and know the quality of the writing won't make me throw away the pen or the paper.

Me too. Pilot G2 0.5 mm gel pen. I hate cheap ball point pens with a passion.

What was the calculator for?

Mostly paperwork. I'd do most of it by hand, but when numbers didn't line up I didn't usually waste time looking for the mistake, I'd just do it all again with the calculator.

It's really a carry over from Amflight, though. It seemed like we did a lot more math on our paperwork there than at ExpressJet, so I just kinda kept the thing in there (I had to wear a uniform at Amflight too). I forget where I put everything, but I had things shoved everywhere. I think I'd keep my schedule in the right pocket, calculator and pen in the left, yada yada.

The issue with using the same pen over and over from your shirt pocket is that the pocket "holster" gets dirty and looks bad, especially if you wear the same shirt for 2-3 days at a time.

I use that one to sign my name in to hotel logs or as an emergency backup to not having another one handy to put in the pen holder up front.
