A serious issue: a lack of free hotel pens

The fun thing is finding a pen at the bottom of your flight bag from an overnight you haven't done for a year+. But losing the one you just grabbed that morning. Go figure!

Hopefully they don't start charging 5 bucks for the pens, the way they do water.

HUGE pet peeve of mine. If I want to buy a water bottle I will go to the store. Don't try to sell me crap in my room!!! A mini bar is the only exception, since out of sight out of mind.

Yeah, whats this ACARS business?? Well, actually we have ACARS but no digital atis and no doing W&B for us.

It's that thing where you can go to the index page, hit the MISC REPORTS prompt, hit the OTHER prompt, type in ATL XGDL BALL SCORES into and figure out if your team won or lost.

I had about 3 JC clicky pens from 2004. They're long gone by now, either being re-appropriated or out of ink. I think right now, the two I have are Wings Financial and some FBO from TVC. All I know is they're white and blue and write in black ink. :)

As for notepads.....my release generally looks like a doodlepad by the time the flight is over between clearances, ATIS and w&b stuff. I'm notoriously lazy for not writing down ATIS or PDCs since they're in ACARS.

Me too. Pilot G2 0.5 mm gel pen. I hate cheap ball point pens with a passion.

The funny thing is that in order to get whatever you are writing to transfer to the second page in a Delta aircraft logbook, you have to use a cheap ballpoint pen. The gel pens don't work. There is even a sentence in the FOM about not using gel pens.

Remember the triumphant memo about our ability to use blue pens? :)

In an effort to show solidarity the union issued red pens for which we were to use for aircraft writeups (not work action related). We quickly got a memo and an updated FOM that required the use of black or blue ink pens.

Not writing down the PDC is awesome.

Until the ACARS craps the the bed and it's gone.

Been there, done that.

Hence the reason my laziness is notorious rather than the run of the mill laziness. I generally toss the squawk in the box and set the initial altitude in as soon as we get the PDC. Departure freq goes in the scratch pad (aka the stand by on Nav 2). If it's a re-route, it gets written on the release anyway.

What happens when the FMS and the ACARS go down together?

Seen that happen too! Now you're without your route in the FMS or in the ACARS history. In fact it happened once when we were like number 3 for departure on a nasty night in Newark. That ended up being a fun night.

See jtrain it's total effort:

If all the effort you save by NOT writing it down is still greater than the work you're gonna have to do the ONE time it does disappear, you still come out ahead. :)

(hopefully that comes close to making sense)

What is up with ACARS anyways? on the Canadair ACARS always prints out ATIS automatically and nothing else unless you tell it to, on the Embraer ACARS prints out everything automatically except the ATIS - by the end of the flight we've used up the whole roll of paper.

It seems to solve the lack of free hotel pens and notepads that seems to be afflicting the industry these days until you run out of ACARS paper.

Okay, serious quesition...do airline pilot uniform shirts have a place for a pen? Is it in the standard "nerd pocket" spot"?

Actually you can buy shirts where the whole pocket is a pen holder - the left pocket got a small stitch to make a pen holder in the standard spot -the right pocket is open - you can put calculators, skeds, shades in your pockets without having to unbutton the pocket flap (which you can't unbutton anyway as the pocket flap and the button are fake and are just for show)

First time I had to go on the internet thank god for

OT - that remark reminded me of a time we were going into Northern Japan for a field exercise. The Japanese heard the Americans were coming and wanted to make our stay at their Army base "pleasant" so they asked what we wanted. We just want to make sure there's a place to shower and use the facilities, so that we didn't have to set up our field showers, etc. So the built the Americans a brand new "facilities" building for the at their Japanese Army base. We show up and get shown the tour of the brand new "facilities" building for the Americans... It was spotless and smelled great. This place would impress women at a football stadium. We walk in and there are stalls galore as far as the eye can see - I think there were like 50 toilet stalls with each stall equipped with its own electric seat warmer and water jet bidets. How many showers? Zero - zilch and two sinks with two mirrors... We think "we'd like shower facilities" got lost in translation. We set up the field showers. And as soon as all the seat warmers got turned on - the power surge knocked out power to the entire Japanese Army base - we unplugged all the seat warmers and told all the Marines not to use them.

The best hotel pens in the whole world come from the Inn on the Park in MSN. They're clickers!

When I was at Chicago Express, those were the ONLY pens I used. In fact, I stole a bunch off a cleaning cart one day.

Funny, because yesterday I was at my parents house and needed a pen. Lo and behold, it was a MSN pen!

Oh, and always write down the clearance. Huge pet peeve. I don't like having to dig through the ACARS pages to find the PDC and route change that wasn't entered into the FMS. Dangit, are you trying to get me violated??

My dear old grandmother was a cleaning lady at a hotel a few years ago and someone stole a bunch off a cleaning cart. She couldn't attest to where all of the pens went and she got sent to Guantanamo Bay because of her immigration status and a parole violation involving the Plunko game at "The Price is Right" -- sad, unfortunate circumstance.

Now I've found the man that got grandma sent away. Righteous vengeance will fall upon your head, you have been FOREWARNED!

(Just kiddin'! She's been dead for years)
