$75k to spend

Putting an offer on a '66 182J with 250 hours on a Air Plains IO-550 conversion and a 3 blade scimitar prop, a completely refurbished panel, and decent P+I tomorrow. It's a bit more than we had planned on spending, but I think it will be worth the extra dough.

Ensure that the AD for the external power port has been accomplished.

Not very but I think within the last 10 years. I don't remember if it has to do with the air plains conversion or if it's someone else's but definitely check because the alternative is fire.

10-4 thanks

Airplane is local to me, and the mechanic I'm going to have do a prebuy is really good, so I'm sure he'll check all that.

I'm sure he will, but since airplanes are a lot of money, I'd have every possible AD written down and go through the mx logs and make sure each one is complied with myself as well.
Most good mechanics have a list and it's compliance date, and possibly logbook page on a separate sheet of paper in the logs to make this easy.

There's not much recourse if there's an AD he misses that costs you 20k to fix after the fact.

Ya, I'd be a bit concerned about useful load and cg. The 550 is significantly heavier than a 470.
Load should be fine, IIRC a lot of those old 182s had useful load close to empty weight. But CG could be a problem, they were nose heavy anyway.

I don't think it'll make it overweight, but going from lets say 1500 useful to 1300 isn't cool in my book.

I doubt the difference between a 470 and 550 is 200 lbs, but even if it is, TANSTAAFL. Some folks would consider the weight and fuel burn a fair trade for performance, some wouldn’t. And that’s ok.

I'm going to guess it's only about a 75lb difference.

You may need to carry ballast for the CG though with only 2 on board, it's already pretty easy to be too far forward in the 182.

It might not be. The 470 is a heavy motor to. There is 200lbs between a parallel valve 540 and a 550.

Isn’t comparing a 540 and 550 apples to oranges though?
470->550 is more appropriate.

For me, 200lbs decrease in useful maybe good, if it gives me say 10knots and say same fuel burn. Because I don’t stuff my bird. I don’t even know if I’ve ever been close to gross. Well, maybe once now that I think of it.

Flew the airplane today. Useful load is only 863, which is kind of a bummer, but people say buy an airplane for 80% of your mission, and this thing will do 90% of mine. It climbed like a raped ape with 3 guys on board and 50 gallons of fuel.

Yes, but we haven't made an official offer yet, I am going to wait until we do before I post pics. The internet can be a cruel and unforgiving mistress.
That's understandable. Good luck with the buying process. It sounds like quite a machine.
