$75k to spend

How much would missing log books from 1971 to 2000 detract from the value of an airplane? The prop and engine has been overhauled since then.

A friend was asking the same thing for an arrow.
Its take away 15-25%, but that's a number I pulled out of my ass. If you really interested, you can pull the 337's from the FAA. I takes about a week If I recall.
The problem though, is that a gear up, or engine replacement due to a prop strike won't show up. It doesn't require paperwork to the FAA to replace an engine or skin, because at the end of the day, it's not a major alteration. Your GD right it needs to go in the logbook, but as you stated where are they covering that period?

I'd say, if it suits your needs, and not looking to flip it in a few years, go to a pre-buy.

Ownership is awesome. I love going to hangar whenever I'm able to, a know that it has full tanks the seat belts are crossed.

Replacing a skin is a typically a major repair and should be documented on a form 337.

I don't see any of the 235 hp variants with a nose wheel for sale at the moment, but it might be something to look out for.
If you're ok with a tailwheel, there's quite a few M5-210's for sale usually at a pretty good price for what you're getting. Downside being the Continental IO-360, which isn't much loved by anyone. High likelihood of a crank AD. But all of the Maule's with the exception of the M4-180V are 4 seats whether it's a super old M4 with the O-300 on it or a brand new M7 with the IO-540 on it.

I'd rather not get a tailwheel aircraft, for a few reasons. I also forgot that the Maule family are fabric covered. If we get an airplane, we're most likely going to have to keep it outside for the first few years, and I heard that is really bad for fabric airplanes.

The fuselage is. The wings are metal. And it's really not, no one uses cotton and hasn't for probably 40+ years.
The most fabric covered concentration of aircraft probably on the planet is Alaska, where virtually everyone keeps them outside year round.
I'll admit I'm a bit of a Maule fan, though I've not owned one. But they do still make new ones AND support all of the aircraft they've made since the beginning. The factory also owns a lot of the STCs, and they're all free. Really good factory support according to my IA that owns 2.

Oh, ok. That still leave the tailwheel issue though.

There's an MXT7-180C with an IFR panel and aux tanks for sale for 65k on barnstormers right now.

The T denotes nose draggers. The C is constant speed prop.

The good news is when you come to your senses and want a tailwheel, you can call them and order the parts and paperwork from the factory.

There's a wrecked one with 235HP, so they do exist.

Thanks for that. Signing up for beechtalk now

Anyone here have experience with a Beech Sierra? They aren't that fast, but faster than a 172, and a bunch of them have jump seats in the baggage compartment, which checks off the 6 pax capability for one of my potential partners. They are also pretty cheap, AOPA is selling one that has new P+I, a pair of G5's, a G650 GPS and they are asking $83k. I signed up for the Beech Aero Club, and from what I am reading on there, its not that expensive to maintain, especially compared to Bonanza's. I flew a 200hp Beech Sport (which is essentially a fixed gear Sierra) this past summer, and it flew very nice, was very comfortable in the front seats, and rode the bumps very well on a bubbly summer afternoon.
The school I went to was all Beech for the majority of the fleet. The Sundowners were the most comfortable airplanes with a ton of available fuel. Doesn't go anywhere fast but it was a nice ride. Our commercial stuff was then in F33As and the only thing nice about that was you felt cool with a retractable gear. Not comfortable at all.

Flew a Musketeer once. Thought it was a nice, very-solid-feeling airplane, if a bit truck-like. Only Beech product I've ever flown.

There's aircraft from the 60's still flying with the school now. Only if everything was built to last like a Beechcraft.

Logs are half the value of the airplane.

If you're planning on keeping it for a long time then maybe that's a good deal or maybe not but just never expect to sell it for what other airplanes sell for and expect to have problems selling it if/when you do.

It's between a 10 to 25% price penalty from what I have heard from some friends in the know. The owner has all the 337's and AD's from before 2000, so it should be at best a 10% penalty.

You need to make sure he or the FAA have a copy of all the 337s and Stcs or it's as if they did the stc but never did the paperwork. Which means the paperwork needs to be done again.
