737 Max compared to Airbus NEO

. So I'm curious how it's different in the A320, if hitting VS after the altitude capture mode has already initiated screws up the AP logic with regards to altitude capture and hold, but I can see where people from my company transitioning would drive Derg crazy...

The 320 does a pretty nice job leveling off and not becoming a mock- vomit comet ride. But yes I always figured it was basic airmanship not to go rocketing into traffic above you at 4000fpm, I'd usually go VS +/- 1000fpm enough in advance to avoid that scenario.

Sssooo.... Don't do that, but it's okay to do that is what I'm getting from this.

I'm still not so clear on what exactly happens if you er... Do it wrong I guess. My dumb airplane has manual throttles and a climb mode that sucks and I doubt you'd ever scare anyone with it's climb rate anyway.

This is so cool. Pilots arguing over the economics of an airframe, without having any of the information that the big brains in network have. Next, you'll all be spouting off investing advice.

There's a Facebook group of pilots in which one of the moderators actually tried to create an investment fund with member contributions. Nah, it's not a Ponzi scheme, trust me.

Sorry, it's not part of my job. When the operator incorporates it into our operating procedures and training programs, I'll do it.
AIM 4-4-10 (d)

d.

When ATC has not used the term “AT PILOT’S
DISCRETION” nor imposed any climb or descent
restrictions, pilots should initiate climb or descent
promptly on acknowledgement of the clearance.
Descend or climb at an optimum rate consistent with
the operating characteristics of the aircraft to
1,000 feet above or below the assigned altitude, and
then attempt to descend or climb at a rate of between
500 and 1,500 fpm until the assigned altitude is
reached.

Yes, I know AIM is not "regulatory" but I dunno, completely disregarding it, just doesn't seem Tier 1. IMO.

What I'm getting from this is I'm going to watch what Derg does on the first leg, and do that. :D

I guess I'm a lazy pilot, but it's not my job to worry about that. In 20 years, I've never tried to convince the TCAS of anything.

I go 1000fpm the last 1000' bc it's much smoother, the AIM recommends it and I'm super ADD so I enjoy having stuff to do. I could sit there and be cool and not care but I'm just too bored. Plus I get paid too much to not apply myself.

If you change a vertical mode while capturing an altitude it will go to that mode then it just goes right back into the altitude capture, no?
I don't even know if it will switch, I think it just stays in ALT* mode. I think. I should know that. #tier3 #yougetwhatyoupayfor #goingforfourth

Is that pile of domestic violence dogcrap behind bars again yet?

Our NEOs have been having some pretty nasty teething problems. Enough to where we won't be filed above FL300 from now on. Engines no likey.

It'll go into the mode you select momentarily and then drop right back into ALT* as it is always looking for that 1G roll in... the window is very tiny for f-ups that @Derg is worried about. I think he may be trying to make it a maddog (where you could really screw yourself in ALT CAP) more than it is, but it is possible to screw it up.

Back in my day, you had to press "alt slt" if you wanted the FD to stop at the number you spun, like a crippled driver with a spinny arm thingie, in to the window. You airline rookies couldn't handle it, I'm sure.

Oh, and if you're doing more than 1500fpm when (if) it decides to capture, secure all loose articles and prepare for burn.
I just finished recurrent in a sim with a Sperry and all I have are three words: I hate you :p (you spoiled bastard) *those last ones don't count*

OK I'll bite as a 175 driver... what do you do in the airbus for the last 1000 feet if you're operating close to other traffic where they're applying min IFR separation to avoid a TCAS RA? Forgive my ignorance... That's the only time I monkey with VS, to convince the plane that we aren't going to hit that guy climbing below us about to level.

Leave it alone.
