Dollars for Delta Dumping

Finally some justice for the kiddies! (and resolution for CC)

Delta Air Lines has reportedly agreed to pay $78.75 million to settle a lawsuit over a 2020 fuel dump that rained down on homes, schools and children playing outside in Los Angeles County and surrounding areas.

According to a report by Reuters, Delta denied wrongdoing and said it settled to avoid the uncertainty, distraction and cost of litigation.

The plaintiffs, supported by several teachers and students, claimed Delta “unnecessarily dumped fuel at a low altitude over densely-populated areas,” causing harm and wreckage which they believe could have been avoided by dumping fuel over the Pacific Ocean or at a higher altitude.

Even if fuel dumping is straightforward (Delta gave kids in LA a free shower once)

If I just randomly made up fuel dump on kids then I’d agree that’s lame.

Yeah but didn’t dump it on kids, which is why you’re here and not Delta. ;)

Truth.

Whenever you see a settlement, the corporate attorneys that are already bought and paid-for because they’re employees of the corporation have said “Ehh, we’ll spend more fighting it and take a PR hit or just pay it out and move forward”

Do large airlines even pay for Pepsicoke? :)

I always assumed that the bottler just considers it an advertising expense because every time the price of a canned coke went up, there’s PepsiCo offering a reduced price and airlines love a deal.

The real question is, does the airplane get lighter as passengers drink more soda?

Ehh, it's SJ's insurance company footing the bill anyway.

Y’all do know how insurance works right? They pay out. Guess what happens to premiums the next year?

Worst are police related settlements. “The city paid!” Um, guess who pays the city?

I actually witnessed that event. I was going to lunch and saw the airplane dumping fuel over what I assumed was Simi Valley. An airliner dragging huge contrails at a low altitude caught my eye, at the time I was unsure what I was seeing, and I had no idea they were going to dump fuel all the way back to LAX.

Yes. The liquid mass previously sealed in a can is now open to the atmosphere and can evaporate & exit through the airplane’s cloaca (known as “outflow valves” in some drawings). The people are also evaporating; zero-fuel weight is a myth.

I mean if any county needed a bath…

I still wonder the environmental impact I made dumping 200k of fuel over China was…
