Skywest Questions

Exactly. So unless this changes, I wouldn't expect any more incentives.
I could see bonuses start to affect hiring. A lot of folks may look solely at that, add in a flow (existant or not) and for now, I think you'll see the AA WO's filling classes. I'm actually considering Envoy at this point. I'd really like to keep a Chicago base, so Envoy, Republic, Skywest, & ExpressJet are currently highest on my radar, with Compass (MSP) a close 2nd if we choose to move back home to Grand Rapids, then it's still a 1 leg to MSP from GRR.

Because the "good enough" will only last so long. Right now what is saving Skywest is the menu of bases one has to choose from, with a few that only have one regional competing with them on the left side of the country. However, if one could potentially make 20k more a year including 15k right off the bat, people will start to consider the commute or move to less desirable bases further east. From a left coasters perspective anyway..

I agree, the pain of commuting is alleviated significantly with a commuting allowance, hotels, a missed commute policy and 20K cash money*. Add the no interview flow, which really does speak to people new to this game, and they are likely to even get some of our new hires, let alone applicants.

In some of our bases out west the bus ride from the craptastic employee lot to the terminal is longer than the trip to work our commuters make who simply go to their small local airport, get dropped off, breeze through KCM and walk off the jumpseat into the terminal at the hub. It is easier in some cases to commute by air.

Anyone at SkyWest care to share their opinion on the leather jacket or the blazer? Is the leather jacket worth the $400 bucks as a poor flight instructor?

Meh. It's a nice jacket. I have one.

I also have a blazer and an overcoat.

I certainly prefer one of these "looks" over the other (hint: it doesn't involve leather).

Apparently with the thinsulate layer, the leather is quite a warm jacket.

Anyone know if they start paying when you start ATP-CTP? I've heard they do but wondered if anyone has gone through it. I scheduled my CTP class date Dec 7 but the only ground class was Jan 2 (maybe for the holidays?) so I was wondering if I'm just gonna be unpaid in Dec?

You will be paid for CTP but only if you start ground school (which you do) within 30 days. It won't be paid until after you start ground, however.

The leather is nice, it's warm, especially with the liner, and is an easy all encompassing uniform piece. It can look good, depending on how you carry it off. Pros: It is easy care, can serve as a warm coat on a layover if you peel the Velcro jewelry off, it doesn't wrinkle, no need for hat/long coat combo, and doesn't look stupid with your faded black Ross/Marshalls/TJMaxx slacks you acquired for $12. you insist on passing off as uniform pants. Cons: I'm not the Fonz, it's heavy, it can be stupid warm, makes you look like a guy waiting on his trans am on a layover at the bar, especially with the gold jewelry peeled off, it's seriously like a mobile sauna when wearing it anywhere but outside, on the ramp, in Detroit, did I mention, it gets heavy?

I like the blazer look, even though I have the leather. The blazer pros: it's how an airline pilot should look, I think....it's lighter, and is easily layered. Looks good over the sweater, if you must brave prolonged deice activities in Rhinelander. Cons: It wrinkles, takes a modicum of care to look "sharp", and can fade, usually slower than the Ross/Marshalls/TJMaxx slacks you acquired for $12. you insist on passing off as uniform pants.

I like the leather, and would get it again as my first coat if I could only have one. The blazer, if you get cold, requires the overcoat, which in turn requires the hat. Great look, but I liked carrying just the leather when I was based in MSP and commuting. Kind of nice to just rip off the name tag and epaulets after a long week, throw it over my stealth and be more incognito on my commute home. Also, keep in mind this first order is the only payroll deduct opportunity if I remember correctly, so if you have any interest in the leather this might be the easiest time to do it.

Hehe, hope that helped.

I think you look like a vaginal cleanser wearing the leather jacket. Then again, I also like the trench coat look, which most people abhor, so take my opinion with a heavy grain of salt.

Indeed. Don't forget your lid.

And don't wear a North Face in the terminal.

I think the leather is definitely worth it. Easy to carry around on a trip, and will last forever. Only thing I would have done different is get that removable thinsulate liner. I had Brasilia west coast overnights on my mind, and was in for a shock during my first walk around in Winnipeg after I transitioned to the RJ. If I remember right it's payroll deductible so you don't have to pay it upfront. I do remember it taking around 3 months, so order early.

I find my optional uniform item selection unexpectedly variant.

Personally, I prefer the blazer/trenchcoat/hat look. But the leather jacket is annoyingly practical at times, and leather jacket + hat doesn't look quite right to me. Hat + short sleeves also somehow seems wrong, to my eye*. Blazer with no hat seems ok-but-a-little-off. And blazer+hat while walking through the terminal with a captain in short sleeves always feels awkward.

So that leaves me with the following valid configurations:

  • Blazer + Hat
  • Leather jacket
  • Short sleeves

If I've flown with the person before, I'll try to match... but I've only been flying locals and standups, so it's been a difficult goal to achieve.

WHY DOES FASHION HAVE TO BE SO HARD?!

Sigh.

Anywhoo.

And I quote (emphasis mine):
When the overcoat is worn without epaulets, then a pilot hat must also be worn

Add epaulets, no hat required. I don't do this myself anymore, but everyone seems to forget about that exemption. I'm a stickler for details (and therefore am included in that group of vaginal cleansers mentioned earlier) :-)

I do wish OO would find a better hat vendor, though. I don't mind the look, but it is horribly uncomfortable. I don't care what any second grader thinks, heads are not circles!

I just got off a five day trip with a new hire from Skywest.

Workmenlike performance. :) Nah, he did a great job and if I could take a blood sample and clone him, I would create a grand army of the SouthernJets Army and make @Seggy bow before thee.

Is CRJ still the way to go? I got some misinformation from an ERJ pilot saying CRJ doesn't get the base you want and you won't progress at all? I thought reserve was longer on the ERJ with less bases?

He's that good. So are at least two more of the Tribe of Brasilia that y'all have snapped up recently.
