Asking for the jumpseat and other lost traditions

Oh so the purser?

I think we just do the purser thing internationally. I really don't know what the difference is. Get on the jet, brief whoevers in the forward galley, walk in the back of the jet, brief the others, go work.

Pick up the phone midlight, press the FWD Cabin button, "Bring me coffee, on the double". Coffee shows up. I don't overcomplicate it.

Curious question. Obviously Capt and FO know their flight assignments for a flight. But when it comes to the FAs, is their assignment for a particular flight, also for a particular FA position on that flight? As in, for this flight today, am the Purser, for the next flight after, am the 2 or B flight attendant, etc?

I can't speak for some of the larger airlines or crews, but the last two airlines I've been employed with (each operating aircraft requiring 2 FAs) there was no "assignment" scheduled. At the last place they just alternated days...Cindy would be FA A, and Carly FA B on the first day, then swap. At the new place there seems to be much more of a seniority mindset. The the senior gals tend to park their behinds in the aft and stay there for the trip.

I don't think there is anything set in stone in their FAM, either.

At SJI they are assigned a,b,c,d on their rotation

They work that all out during their brief they give themselves before arriving at the aircraft. There's a special qual to be a lead flight attendant, unless, of course, they get "escalated" to lead/purser/OBL/whatever-they're-called-after-a-management-change.

There's all these neat rules that go out the window when the company declares "irregular operations".

Thanks for the replies, gents. Interesting the different scheduling styles.

Here at Mormon Airways, they are awarded FF (facing forward, or "after" flight attendant station) and FA (facing aft, or "forward" flight attendant station, which threw me for a loop initially :/ ). Switching is verboten.

The chain of command is Captain, First Officer, FA, and FF.

So wait, SJI does it two different ways?

:sarcasm:

What do you know? You CLEARLY don't have the resume of @MikeD who, despite not having a minute of 121 time, is telling you how it is.

:sarcasm:

Response completely uncalled for...Mike wasn't 'telling' anyone anything. I saw the sarcasm and thought you might've been actually joking around, but noticed your later response. Dude, you need to step away from the keyboard for a while and chill the hell out...and I'm on the side of after block in the GSC has the plane.

I appreciate your response, but stand by my post.

I don't relate 121 operations to Air Force Operations. The reverse should be done as well.

And as stated a number of times here, neither do I relate the two. My questions were pertaining to the limits of Captain responsibility and how that differs from carrier to carrier.

Where the Air Force came into this, I have no idea. I certainly didn't bring it up.

So let me get this straight....you push a button while seated and then someone makes and brings you hot coffee from somewhere in the back of the plane? Wait, what? Who are these minions and how do I get one? I think that button was deactivated on our planes a long time ago! :(

Well, the problem is that the minion in question is probably wrapped up in tape, paper and bubble-wrap somewhere in the hold.

my experience is the one thats the 'A' on the paperwork is always the one that works A so I assumed they were assigned that way.

It's a qualification and a little extra pay.

But if they can't find an "A" to work the flight, they'll "escalate" another flight attendant.

One of the flight attendants that DH'd on my flight from LGA to DTW lived in DTW but he commuted to NYC in order to fly A/Purser on a wider variety of international flights, but discovered that even though he was fairly senior, he was a few from the bottom of the A-qualed flight attendants.

It's pretty handy!

On the flip side, it's the same button you use when you have to go pee :/

Damn you Bin Laden!

You, too, use the EMER button to call if you have to poop? Glad I'm not the only one!
