Southwest Hiring

I haven't received an offer yet to work as a dispatcher or flight follower. I've interviewed so far with a small privately owned company here in Oregon and recently I made it to the last round with Delta Air Lines. I really thought I'd get the job with Delta, but I just found out yesterday I didn't make the cut. It gives me confidence though, because I at least made it that far with a Major with no real world experience. I've since started sending out applications to all open jobs that are posted. I just got my certificate in March this year.
I am quite puzzled by this... you have no experience, yet you thought you would get on at Delta? :bounce::bounce:

Just about every regional is hiring so you would be wise to get on at one and get some experience in the 121 world.... your chances of getting hired at a major with no experience are slim to none.

I'm not that tenured, so please educate me. How does someone with admittedly no real world experience get that far in an interview process? Obviously I am not looking at your resume, but you've got to be doing something right!!

Congrats on getting that far with Delta ! Whatever you're doing keep it up!

I apply at Majors if I meet the basic qualifications.

The last WN posting...

Are you 23 years of age. Check.
Do you have a FAA Dispatch license. Check.

Do you have a High School Diploma. Check.

Then.......College Degree or Course work preferred.

At least one year 121/135 dispatch preferred.

Then you start answering the questions. When I apply I check no on the 1 year 121/experience.

As long as it reads preferred on the posting I'm applying.

Same on the UA posting. I applied as an internal candidate.

Maybe some in here can help us out. As I see it if someone meets the basics and it says preferred then no matter how slim the chances .... I apply. Of course I've never been invited to test.

So WN...I applied. UA....I applied. Will I get called to test ? Probably not. Until I see REQUIRED then I'm going to apply. And I'm not too good for regionals either.

Applied and F2F with Skywest. Applied twice and phone interview with Mesa. Allied XJT 2 times. Applied at HA 3 times. Allegiant 3 times. Endeavor, etc. So I'm applying, applying, applying.

I'm going to say flygirl6 is obviously knowledgeable enough that she was able to do well on the test and warrant an interview. I never bothered to look at the DL posting because as I understood it 121 was required, not preferred.

Don't listen to the naysayers @flygirl6. You got an interview, which is more than can be said for them. Keep working on it and something will happen. Good luck.

As for the rest of you, you ought to be congratulating her instead of criticizing.

It's begun folks. I'm an internal candidate at WN, I didn't check my work email yesterday, but saw today that I've been invited to take the written test. They gave me 2 choices of dates 21st or 22nd of July. I'll be going the 22nd. Good luck to all. Any good advice you can give will be much appreciated.

CONGRATS and the very best of luck !! And thank you for the update. I'm an external candidate.

Wise word of advice, No matter how far you go in the interview process at a major with little to no experience, it is highly unlikely you would get an offer. With few exceptions of people already on the inside, I haven't personally seen anyone go beyond a lateral move without a year 121 experience. That said there are some getting in places with a less 121 experience than used to. By example when I first started sending out apps to the majors, they wanted a minimum of 3 years 121 before they would even look at your stuff. Even longer to be looked at as a contender. For those with a year or so experience chances of moving on now are a lot better than they used to be. Some of us are still toiling in a trench on one level or another waiting for the chance to make the career destination move.

Not true at all DeltaEcho….I know of at least one person with less than 1 years experience at the regional world that was hired in the last class at SWA. Experience isn't the only thing majors are looking for. You have to have good working knowledge and a good attitude. Don't tell yourself that you need to get X number of years as a Dispatcher to apply to the big boys. Keep on applying @flygirl6 !!

I was very upfront with Delta the whole time that I didn't have experience and they knew that when they interviewed me. Yet I still got an interview.... you tell me, what were they looking for? I have a lot of other experience than just dispatching. I was in the military and I finished my commercial pilot certificate. Maybe they weren't looking for a cookie-cutter dispatcher...I don't know. I'm just thankful for the experience to learn and grow from it. (Also I'm a contractor for Delta) maybe that played into it.

Probably so. Nevertheless, it was good experience that will no doubt help you down the road!

I am a little puzzeled Austin7. I never said anything other than what I knew personally. So please don't lambast me for that. And remember, there are those of us that have and put alot into this trade still waiting for the call.

Be prepared to give your answers some thought. That test isn't a cake walk.

She's a DL contractor so close to being an internal candidate, military which airlines love to see, and a female all of which sets off all the HR bells and whistles. No surprise she got the interview and definitely wouldn't have been surprised if she got hired. If she wasn't a DL contractor, I doubt she would have gotten the interview regardless of the other stuff. You need a combination of many things to get tested and interviewed.

The only advise I would say to everyone is don't ever expect or get your hopes up on being hired by a major airline. Some people I know got turned down many times before they were hired. You never know in the moment what that airline is looking for. You can't take it personally when an airline turns you down. All you can do is keep plugging away at the regionals or wherever else you work and keep applying. Eventually with persistence, you have a good chance of one day making it. Timing and luck are major factors. People starting out in this business ten to fifteen years ago had a much different experience than one starting out now and it could go back to that any time.

I only interviewed at one major and was hired. When I interviewed there were a few others in the same position I was in being first time getting a shot for the big show. Most of the people interviewing knew each other. I felt once the interviewing process was done that everyone had a good shot. I wouldn't have been surprised if all of us were hired or none of us were. It just goes to show how much competition and quality candidates there are for only a few jobs.

I will tell this to anyone who will listen. If you never ask the question, the answer is ALWAYS NO. No matter how slim you think your chances, if you meet the basic qualifications, for God's sakes apply! Two reasons. One, you might get lucky. Two, employers like persistence. It shows you are truly interested in THEM not just a job. Obviously one must be realistic in your expectations, but never assume you aren't going to get it if you meet the basic qualifications.

A Delta 777 captain yelled at me the other at a gate for not applying to DL. He said "never assume, let them tell you 'no'"

Yeah great advice everyone. I tired it and I got slammed!
I went into WalMart the other day and filled up a cart with all kinds of fancy foods (right!),...and I thought to myself...If I don't ask the then the answers is always no..
So I pushed the cart to the door without paying and I asked the clerk, 'Hey can I just have all this stuff even tho I havent any money to speak of, nor have a I earned the right to take it?"...and guess what she said...
If you guessed NO, then you are correct. Now Im sitting here in the WalMart Loss Prevention office waiting for the police to take my statement.
So I guess the moral of my story is that even tho I had he hutzpah to just wheel my wagon right to the front of the line, there were serious consequences to such an action.

I laughed when I saw someone posted in one of these forums telling the newbies to stop wasting the recruiter's time by applying if they don't meet the minimum qualifications. Obviously, if anyone has been looking at the hiring classes over the last 2 years or so, they would know that those qualifications are sometimes just a matter of formality.
